Hit Coyote @ 100yds With SD9
Darn coyote ran out of my 3-sided garage this morning. I couldn't get to my sidearm fast enough, so by time I ran to other side of house he was in field about 50yds away and I fired off a couple rounds. Well he was at a slow gait by this time at around 100yds and I fired off couple more rounds and this time I see coyote cringe up and drop to ground, but gets back up and spins in circle and I fire off couple more rounds and it tries to run off, but drops again and more slowly gets back up and runs into a culvert. I go to culvert, see blood on rocks and I hear it inside. I go back up to house and get my flashlight and call my Sister to let them know a coyote is in area and I hit it and it ran into their driveway culvert. Go back to culvert and shine light and there it lies, about 10yds deep inside.
****, don't know how to get out of culvert. Hope my BiL has an idea, but I got a coyote on a slow run at around 100yds with my SD9VE.
I think it was trying to get some of our barn cats, as one is missing, but no blood in area, so hopefully it's just holed up and not coming out to our calls to it.
It's cold out, so seeing a hungry coyote during daylight hours is not uncommon at this time of year in the country.

You're gonna have to go in there headfirst with your pistol and a flashlight. Recommend ear protection. If you are worried about it, tie a rope to your ankle and have somebody ready to yank. Least that's what I would do I'll hold yer beer.

A expandable painting pole should reach it. Make a large loop out of barb wire and attach it to the end of the pole with duct tape or hose clamps. Stick the tool into the culvert, barb wire into the hide, give it a twist and pull the critter out.

My hat is off to you--I regularly miss them with a .223 and a good varmint scope!

Wild dogs are our problem---saw one right in front of the house---ran for my dog rifle. I'm back---the dog is now maybe 50 yards down the driveway. I run for the Boss Lady's truck---going to rest across the hood. There's a tree in the way. I run to another tree---to use as a side rest. There's another tree in the way!!
I go to the middle of the driveway---standing on my hind legs. The dog is now almost at the end of the driveway---250 yards. I know full well I'm not going to hit him, but maybe I'll scare him. Bang! The dog goes down---then gets back up. I found him maybe 30 feet from where he was hit.
And yes, I've been doing my best to avoid shots like that ever since.
Ralph Tremaine
Came across a pack of 14 of them a few weeks later---swimming across the river----an entirely different story.

My mom has a limb cutter that extends around 15-17 feet, and I think it would still be too short.
This idea did come to me. We could cut some small diameter trees with good lengths and place them end to end to try and push the coyote out other end if it comes to it. Using a nailed on small push board on the first inserted pole. Then extract at least the trees on each end and let center portion rot in pipe without any worries.
The culvert is only a 10-12" size, so there won't be any climbing into it. This is what makes it more difficult.
Now, if it had ran into the culvert right next to it, no problem as it's a 24-30" pipe that goes under main road.
Coyote made a beeline to it after being hit, so that told me, it was it's den for a spell to know it would even fit.
I spoke to BiL later in day, and he said don't worry about it, unless it rains and starts doing a back clog into his yard by not washing out near the downslope end. Then we'll start thinking about what to do to get it out.

Way Out Here, we use stumpin' powder. Two sticks should be sufficient. Load in the long side, light with sufficient fuse. Run to other end. Brace for impact. Wear ear protection. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME OR ANYWHERE ELSE and don't you just love it when you connect on those Long ones.

That's a good shot.
We see coyotes around here, too -- in the suburbs of the nation's capital -- but so far only at night. And we can't really shoot at them. They run the 'riparian woodlands,' e.g., the wooded areas along the creeks ('runs' around here) that drain the countryside, shopping centers and apartment buildings and all.

Not saying coyotes aren't nuisances but if you cant kill something with one shot, don't shoot. It doesn't need to suffer because your using the wrong tool for the job.
my .02 cents

I was using the correct tool Nighthawk. It was the tool on my hip that I practice with.
You don't ask a criminal that's about to commit a crime to stop what they're doing while you go get another weapon. You use what you have at that time.
I hunt all seasons for many game, using many different firearms. It might of been a lucky shot I put on that coyote, but the coyote got shot non the less.
Is it suffering. Who cares. It's a coyote.

I'm kinda with you on this Dusty3030, as I really would like to get it out just to get the skull.
It's one of those, who cares it's a coyote. Well, it's the coyote that was shot at 100yds(with a pistol) that makes for the trophy story.

I'm glad you shared this story. I too carry an SD9. We have cyots all over the place in this country. Next time I'm out and about and see one of them suckers I'm taken a shot. Who know I might get lucky too. Then I'll have a good story to share with the grand kids.
See what you can do when you: Shoot, Shoot, Shoot and then Shoot some more. You can kill a yoty at 100 yds with a man gun too.

So spray and pray with your wonder 9 and your prayer was answered you got lucky. Big deal I found a $20 bill on the ground once. Certainly nothing to brag to the grandkids about.
