Default SD9VE Massachusetts compliant trigger Apex spring kit

Hey all, just got a SD9VE used (with only about 20 rounds through it) for $250 at my favorite local shop in Mass. As you all know, has about a 10.5 lb trigger pull...

I took it to the range, couldn't hit any targets, had a friend shoot it, he showed me I was pulling the gun based on the heavy trigger. If I slowed down and throught about every shot, I did OK shooting it.

I will be using this as a part time carry gun, and like shooting it at the range. It was very fun and reliable on Brass cased ammo, and would not eject aluminum case for some reason... May have been that the ammo was swelling in the chamber, I don't know- dropping the mag and racking the slide cleared the spent shell, but every time I fired a mag with aluminum, first went bang, and would not eject... Clear it, re-insert the mag, bang, would not eject... Thats for another time...

What I really wanted to know is, has anyone installed just the Apex spring kit in a SD9VE that is Massachusetts compliant and recorded before and after results? I do not want the trigger too light as I will carry it on occasion, I want to keep the stock trigger for now as I like the long pull being a SD gun, but want a lighter pull.

Please if you have done the spring kit in a SD9VE let me know your results! I want it reliable, fun, and I just love this gun.

also, if anyone has had issued with aluminum cased 9mm please let me know if you resolved the problem.

I also have a model 36-1 38 spl revolver and a M&P 15 Sport in my arsenal of S&W firearms, and I love them all.

but was yours a Mass compliant or a regular model with 8.5 lb trigger?

Apex states a 2lb reduction on trigger pull with their kit, so I emailed and asked if that was a 2lb reduction on the 8.5 lb trigger or if it would reduce even the Mass trigger to 6.5 or 5.5 lbs- they said every gun is different and the mass compliant guns also have a strong sear spring, and they couldn't say how the gun would feel after...

try it , it's only about $20 . Mine dropped from around 8# to 5.5# , had to put the original striker spring back in (started getting light strikes) and now about 6#

so what did you end out changing? Just the trigger return spring and the block spring?

My SD9VE runs aluminum just like brass, flawless in 2500 rounds.

Thumbs up Happy in MA

I bought my SD9VE new at Cabela's in Berlin just after Christmas, it's my first gun. I'm really impressed with the quality of the machining and workmanship, but the "self-defense" trigger had to go - the hinge was goofy, although I didn't mind the pull that much, as most of my experience up to now was with revolvers. So I ordered the parts and my friend and I installed the spring and tactical trigger kits, it went pretty smoothly, just played along with "sootch00" and his youtube video. Some of the pins were crankier than others to extract, and the lining up of the pin that goes through the trigger spring and slide lock was kinda fussy, but we got it done over a lunch hour.

I only shot 100 rounds so far with the new configuration (just did the mod yesterday), but it was butter-smooth, the stroke felt shorter, I loved the Glock-style trigger safety as opposed to the stock mid-trigger hinged safety, and it just ran flawlessly. I don't have a trigger scale and I'm not an experienced shooter, but it felt as good as any semi I've ever shot. Can't say I noticed a big difference in accuracy, mostly because the gun shoots better than I point these days. As for the commonly reported issues with these mods, we didn't have to do any filing on the backside of the trigger, no reset issues, I got no light primer hits from the altered striker spring, the trigger pin didn't walk out - zero problems. And honestly, it looks way better without that short-bus-looking stock trigger. All in all, I can't recommend the Apex springs and trigger combo any more highly.

I finally ordered the kit- Ironically, I bought it off ebay, and the guys shipping status never updated, so I got a refund, and oredered directly from Apex, and the original order showed up the same day as the Apex one, so I have 2 kits... Anyway, it took me about 30 minutes to install it between giving my 2 kids showers and watching tv in bed with my wife. Easy to install the kit, and the only reason the trigger pivot would walk out is if the slide release isn't sitting in the groove on the trigger pin.

I opted to replace all the springs including the striker spring, and I kept the factory trigger for now. Knowing how easy this was, I can always add the Apex trigger later. I have not fired it yet, but I will say I like the new feel of the trigger - it feels about 1/2 lb heavier than my Ruger LC9S which has a great trigger. it still has the gritty resistance feel to it, but I am ok with that and the travel for now, it breaks much more cleanly and resets crisply so I think I am good with it- we will see after I shoot a couple hundred rounds through it though.

The funny thing is, Apex claims it drops 2 lbs off the trigger pull over factory, but I think that is based on the lighter non-Mass compliant triggers, because this feels to me more like a 6lb or 5.5lb trigger now versus the 8-8.5 that I would expect from a 2lb drop... Whatever the case, the trigger return spring was the noticeable difference in tention when I changed it, and I cannot wait to go to the range this weekend and shoot it!! I will update how it feels after my range report.

I was pulling it horribly before I changed the springs, to the point at 25 feet I was missing a 11x18 target entirely- and I am a decent shot with other handguns I have.

I did notice on my extractor it almost looked a little chipped, so if I continue to have issues with extraction, I may change the extractor. Also, I cleaned up the extractor spring and oiled it so maybe that will make a little difference. Last trip to the range, it actually looked like the extractor was basically pulling part of the rim off the shell casing instead of extracting it. It was as if the shell was getting stuck in the chamber, and the extractor did not have enough force to rip it out, so instead it ripped the lip off the casing...

it runs brass so flawlessly, I may just use up my aluminum in the Ruger LC9S which eats it, and not buy any more.

Default Minimum trigger pull weights

I know we're not supposed to get into politics here, but this just can't go unsaid. I'm concerned about someone being fooled into thinking something that might be false.

So, let me get this straight, in MA, the state mandates minimum trigger pull weight on all new firearms? Just autoloaders? How about revolvers or rifles? Target guns? But, the user can then LEGALLY change the trigger pull weight to anything they wish (as long as it's technologically possible). Or is it a case of "what the state doesn't know won't hurt 'em". If legal, can a MA gunsmith do the same?

I don't want to incriminate anybody here, so if this whole thing is questionable, and you've done these kinds of mods in MA, don't reply to this post. Unless, of course, you wish to. If you simply just know the answers to these questions, please DO reply.

Seems to me, if this whole concept is legally questionable, with Maura Healey as AG in MA, a defensive shooting in MA, with one of these lightened triggers, would turn into a case of the victim turning into a more villainous criminal than the original criminal.

Of course, if you're just expressing civil disobedience, more power to ya. About time MA got a few nads back. "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

The state mandates what manufacturers can put in firearms before selling. I think mods are legal as long as you don't turn a rifle to an SBR or add a bayonet lug on an AR lol- the laws don't make sense. I have the notion that any functional mod, maybe any mod, will make the gun non-compliant in that state. On the other hand, if it isn't used outside a range it probably won't become an issue.

I finally go out to the range to test out the trigger kit- WOW WOW WOW!! I installed all the springs (return spring, trigger block spring, and firing pin spring) and I have about 125 rounds through it flawlessly! Every one went bang, and I have to say, my buddy has a Shield 9mm with the apex kit in it, and the factory trigger, and they feel almost identical as far as trigger pull goes. I like the long takeup, but now it breaks cleanly, has a nice fealt reset, and is just such a nice pistol to shoot now! My accuracy went from about 40% on paper, to about 95% on paper, and most in about a 6" circle at 30 feet at times double tapping pretty rapidly. I was using an 11x18 target, and using the upper half to gauge my point of aim- I was a little left of center, but did pretty well. I am very happy with the kit, and highly recommend it.

Exclamation Uh, depends upon your definition & the significance of "compliant"...

"Compliant for sale" differs greatly from "an illegal weapon", but in those various & sundry WHACK-JOB states...? Who knows?

P.S. There certainly ought to be someone from The Spirit of America (sic) state with a clue...

Thread after thread, I keep hearing about these defective triggers. Counting the sigma, I've had 3 or 4 of these guns and they all worked well.

I wouldn't buy a gun that I thought needed to be upgraded right out of the box in order to function properly.

State laws directed at manufacturers regarding a state requirement for new production usually have "grandfather clauses" that don't necessarily make prior versions or modifications illegal per se...

I feel "Who knows?" pretty much speaks for itself.

Someone in MA on this forum is more likely to have a quick and dirty answer than some one from, say, CA (where they are scheduled to have to turn in their evil magazines) or AZ (where you have always been able to carry)...

The trigger wasn't defective from the factory- It worked fine, but in Mass at 10.5 lbs trigger pull, I just could not shoot it accurately. With the Apex kit, it's natural and very accurate. Still has the factory hinged trigger. Basically, by putting the Apex kit in, the gun feels like every other SD9VE that people outside Massachusetts and California can buy. Factory triggers that are normal are about 6.5 -7 lbs, and I think the Apex kit is about 5.5-6 lbs

BTW I still have the second Apex Kit I bought for sale- I'll take $20 plus shipping if anyone wants it.

The law requires the gun to have a 10-lb. trigger when the dealer sells it originally. Actually, S&W assigns certain SKU numbers to the "MA Compliant" guns that can be sold here. (See their web site catalog.) After the original sale, the owner can change out the trigger. The Apex is popular. Any guns sold new in MA must pass a series of tests, and even then the attorney general can refuse to certify them. No other firearms are illegal to own, as long they don't have "Assault Weapon" features. But they can't be transferred by an FFL. They can be bought by a licensed person from another licensed individual. It all makes sense to our overlords in Boston.
