Default Upgrading a cheap pistol

Like so many people I find myself getting aboard the grip/sight/guide rod spring/rear slide plate/takedown lever/mag base plate/Apex trigger upgrade carousel. As of now my SD9VE is stock and I have decided to be content with that with one exception.... I have decided that the only upgrade I "need" is a Talon Grip. My hands got sweaty at a range recently which had poor heating and cooling. I didn't like that. So still being a cheap you know what, does anyone have a current discount code for Talon grips?

Thanks, but I tried that one. It is out of date. 25% off would be great.

There is a point of diminishing return with upgrading an inexpensive gun... but it varies by owner what you want to spend and how much you want to tinker. Talon grips are not that expensive, and if they make it a better pistol for the shooter, then its a good deal.

Think of how many revolver owners have tried various grips... wood, rubber, G10, etc.! At least we can't change the actual grips on the SD's.

The Glocks and M&Ps definitely allow a lot more ways to modify those pistols. I had an M&P a couple of years ago that cost around $350, but after doing a lot of Apex modifications and trying an aftermarket Wilson Combat barrel, I realized I had over $800 in it. And it didn't shoot that much better than the basic model. Could have bought a Sig or a CZ for that kind of money... and accuracy would not have been an issue.

But I had a lot of fun, and learned a lot, doing the mods and trying to improve the way it shot. (Note: most buyers are not thrilled by home gunsmithing modifications on the used pistols they are thinking about buying). I've never read anything definitive on the M&P9s to tell me whether their lack of accuracy comes from the way the barrel is fit, the barrels themselves (they changed the twist rate around 2012), or whether the problem comes a timing issue related to the locking/unlocking sequence of the action. I've read all of those explanations on the Forums. In any case, I could never wring that final bit of accuracy out of my M&P9's. For me, the SD9 works just fine, at a much lower cost. The only mod I am running right now is the after-market take-down plate.

How much are those Talon grips?

I think I paid $17 for Talon grips for my SD. It's the only upgrade I plan to do to it. I did mount a light/laser combo on the rail but I don't see that as an upgrade to the gun because it's just on the rail.

New to these forums and recently bought sd40ve. I see a lot of folks suggesting talon grip. My inquiry is, does anybody have any thoughts on the pachmayr or hogue slip on grips? I'm not dissatisfied with the stock grip, just would like a little better hold on it.

I have the pachmayr grip on mine and I love it. Gives a much more positive feel to the gun and control is much better for follow up shots. I have larger hands so it fits me perfectly

Thanks for the feedback. I will check it out this weekend. I was also thinking about the possibility of using flex seal as an alternative, but I wouldn't want to void my warranty. I also don't want the grip to get too "bulky" though.

Cheapest way to go would be a bike inner tube from
the clearance aisle at Wallyworld--they get as low as
$1. Get the widest tube you can find.

You'll find a zillion uses for innertube rubber, besides
cheap sticky grips.

I like the inner tube idea. But it does bring up another concern that I had not thought of. Will rubber Talon or Traction grips make your hands stink like rubber for the rest of the day?

Just another factor to consider.

I have both Talon and Traction grips, and never noticed an odor.

Talon usually has a sale once or twice a year. Just subscribe to the web site and you will get a email when they go on sale again. They work great and no smell.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I use Pachmayr tactical grips on my SD9VE and SD40VE and they work great for me.

I put the pachmayer grip on my SD9VE but took it back off as it rotates around . Cleaned both the pistol and grip with alcohol but no difference

My local bike shop will give me old/used/damaged bicycle inner tubes free. I have these cheap grip sleeves on several handguns and my Kel-Tec Sub 2000. Never had them move, rotate, or make my hands smell funky. Turn them inside out and wipe off the powder with rubbing alcohol. Yes, I'm cheap.

Well that does it. I am on the Talon distribution list waiting for a coupon code and in the interim I am going to grab an inner tube. What size? Like a 2.25" BMX?

An alternative is Grip Tape, aka "skater tape," also called 3M Stair Safety Tape, placed on the front strap and the resting place for the thumb.

The grip tape on the SD shown works really well.

Thumbs up

The "ACADEMY EXCLUSIVE" SD9 & SD40 doesn't need any kind of grip. S&W did a very good job on the pistol grip stippling. It feels like a bunch of little spikes in your hand, but, in a good way.
