It was not designed or priced to be a target pistol.

We just had my SW40VE out at the farm shooting about three weekends ago. Afterwards, I cleaned it up, loaded it and put it back in the truck.

I have several. The oldest was acquired about two decades ago. All have been perfectly reliable.

Is something wrong with the trigger?

If the gun goes boom when the trigger is pulled, IMO, that is a great trigger. Most people will adapt to a heavier trigger pull if they shoot the gun enough.

I guess I'm just used to a hammer fired 1911 types.

I am currently carrying a Star Super A, so I understand what you are saying. But I also carry DA revolvers, a 12 pound trigger is good to me. I have one revolver a Colt Police Positive, manufactured in 1911, with a 17 pound trigger, it shoots great.

Shoot it, you will get used to it.

Anyone have date of manufacture?

Is there any chance that your FIL gave you the original box?

98% of the time, the box will have the exact Date of Manufacture on it coded under "SPEC ORD"

Going from serial number lists I would guesstimate that one to be around 2008
