Default Love my new SD9

Don't know why people tend to dislike this pistol. Highly accurate and looks great especially with new sights and a few customizations.

Love my SD9VE. Most under-rated pistol on the market.

Default So far....

I've put 700 rounds through it, including my CCW class, and have never had any type of issue. Not a single misfire, stovepipe, nothing.

I'm glad to hear that, as I just picked up a "cherry" SD9 yesterday. I've already ordered the Galloway "wide body take down plate", Tractiongrips, and the Apex spring kit. I got this gun because it was cheap, and will make a good center console/tractor gun.

Nice to know!

I know virtually nothing about these - what are the various modifications that you made? I see the sights but I don't know if they are after market or not and what is "ROSER"?

I never got the impression they did. They seem to largely get very good reports from owners. I've been casually on the lookout for one on my local classifieds for a good while now, and they almost never pop up, and when they do they aren't priced significantly lower than new ones, yet they still get snagged quick.
Nope, no tendency to dislike them that I've ever observed.

The SD family still bears some of the negativity that was associated with early Sigmas... today, that negativity is really not deserved. The SDs are very good value for the money, and are reliable and accurate. It is amazing how many reviews of the pistol in more recent years are very positive - like, "hey, this pistol is pretty good!" after the reviewer had expectations of a poorly made pistol.

The trigger is another matter. It sometimes garners some condescension by those who prefer a pistol with a better "target" or competition-style trigger. People who get used to it, and those who treat it just like a double-action revolver trigger, get along fine. Folks who are looking for that trigger with more of a decisive "break" like a good Sig-Sauer or a well-made 1911, well, those folks don't like the longish and heavy trigger of the SD. To be fair, though, it's part of the "self defense" role of the pistol - and not so hard to use once it is broken-in and the shooter has learned to master it.

Yep that's what I disliked about my SD40VE. Great shooter, ate everything I fed it but I just couldn't get past the trigger so I gave it to my buddy who loves his SD9 and bought an M&P40

Yeah, I think I might have been a little unclear. What I meant was that people tend to dislike the trigger, and they seem to take it out on the pistol overall until they replace it.

I like the trigger just fine, in fact I like the fact that it is a self-defense trigger.

ROSER is my last name, just wanted to personalize it with a custom laser-engraved rear slide plate from Laser's Edge Studios.

lasersedgestudio.com

The white lettering I did by rubbing a white crayon across the stampings until filled, then removing the excess with a paper towel lightly sprayed with WD-40...Once the excess crayon is removed, and THE WD-40 IS EVAPORATED (I can't stress that enough), run a lighter back and forth across the stampings until the crayon melts and settles into the stampings. Then just let it cool and do the other side.

I've put a couple hundred rounds throught it and the crayon is staying put just fine.

I can see that, but the trigger is a big part of a firearm. It it the only reason I got rid of mine same as how I won't buy a glock because I hate the way they feel in my hand. It probably doesn't help that the SD's are the low end of the S&W line which turns certain people off to begin with

That's what the appeal was for me, as far a being a low-cost entry level pistol. I've owned long guns for years, but never thought much about a pistol until the last couple of years. I'm still educating myself about my own weapon and others. I'm quite happy with the value of this firearm, but I'm certainly under no illusions that it's anything other than a base-model handgun.

I intend to buy another handgun after the first of the year for concealed carry, and keep this one ready for use at home.

Any suggestions for a next-level pistol from anyone? I'm not a S&W loyalist by any means, but if anyone has feedback on any of their offerings I'd appreciate it. I don't want to spend more than $1,000, and would prefer to stay closer to $800.

Thanks!

My humble suggestion for a excellent conceal carry pistol is the Kahr K9. Get it with night sights, you'll love it.

I agree on the Kahr K9 as it is a great pistol for CCW, both IWB and OWB.
I only have one Kahr pistol and it is a Kahr T9. Superb pistol.

So, after taking into account many opinions and suggestions from many sources, I finally decided on a second pistol, a little better suited for concealed carry.

I just paid for a Kimber Micro 9 Woodland Night (LG), but got smacked with a 3 day wait until I can pick it up. Oh well.

Any thoughts on the Kimber?

Seems like a good little gun. Although, I've heard that some Kimbers are very finicky about ammo. Make sure yours isn't.

The Kimber:

Academy Sports has both the SD9 and the SD40 on their website (ships to store) with the FDE frame and black slide for $299. The SD9 is currently out of stock, and I'm hoping they will get another one...I'd sure like to get one. I've always liked that color combination.

they are solid guns among a crop of many other solid guns. I think in the 250-270 dollar range they are a good value. Among budget guns they are one of the better values out there mostly in part that they are basically a 4th generation sigma and all the kinks were worked out by gen 3.

Sigmas and SDs have always been bashed mostly due to brand loyalty to glock, sig, etc. etc. They were always solid guns outside the very early sigmas when they first hit the market and had not worked out the manufacturing issues. Those need a little tweeking but were still solid performers.

Now ... the SD doesnt really jump out at me because its just another version of the sigma which has been around a long time. In other wors...its not new and hip blah, blah. It is for the most part bug free though. There are a few areas where I think s&w went backwards on the sd from the sigma but its nothing the casual gun owner is going to notice.

new stuff seems to come out all the time....mostly throwaway junk that looks nice. Look at whats happened to ruger. Almost everything they put out for semiauto pistol is junky. The ruger American is the first real ruger that has come out since they dropped the P series. They mostly just put out variations of Keltec designs now. The American being the exception.

I think the biggest thing from the SD line becoming a more dominating pistol on the market is a lack of parts support from the factory. Things like strikers and extractors etc really are not available and S&W wont sell them to the public. Anyone serious about a particular gun design is going to have spare parts on hand for maintinance and most of these new striker pistols have issues at one time or another. Usually due to wear and tear.

THIS, x 1000...it's why Glock is so popular, you can go to any city, anywhere, and find Glock parts. Smith and Wesson need to get their parts out there, BS on the 'liability' reasons for not doing it, otherwise Glock would have been out of business by now...

I still don't understand the disdain for the original Sigmas. I inherited a SW9VE from my Father-in-law. It has always been a good shooter. The 'dreaded' trigger has never been an issue for me.

Apparently the same undeserved disdain applies to the SD9/SD9VEs.

It does not say glock on it.

Sigma...
better ergonomics and better streamlined compared to glocks

well designed steel magazines
Stainless steel slide
fully supported chamber
Lower price
Made in America

Only possible gripe would be the trigger which I actually like as is when its smooth. i actually like heavier triggers ... especially on a defensive weapon.

So yes its basically internet brand talk that does not equate to reality. Glocks are good guns as well but this whole notion that they are better than this or that is a myth.

I will give you another one. Ruger keltec ripoffs are better than keltecs.... nope. Thats another false notion. They might be more pretty than keltecs but the secret lies in the quality of steel. Keltecs also hold up better than ruger LCPs.

Sigmas are classics for me. I shoot them alot. There are some issues as there is with any gun. There were changes thoughout the generations along with improvements in manufacturing. but none were bad and all of them were safe. All of mine are accurate.

complaints?... sure... here are a few

different frames between 40 and 9mm.... glock got that right

No 45acp... only polymer s&w not to offer a 45acp. The frame can take 40s&w it can take 45acp.

discontiuation of 357sig. I am guessing the frames couldnt take it long term similar to the issues glock had early on with the 40s&w/357sig

Not a true double action with second strike capability. S&w missed the boat on this IMO. There are lots of striker guns out there with second strike and its an advantage that could have been marketed.

My take is that s&w made a mistake trying to push the sd9 as a M&P. The sigma had its own personality and was building a great following. They had the 9mms and 40 perfected and sold them in big numbers. The reputation was as high as ever. I was hopeing for new variations such as 45acp... Sigma compacts... longslides etc. etc. Then they got screwy and made the sd into a M&P lookalike budget model.

Oh well. SD series are still very solid guns. Much better than the ruger security 9 or many of the other budget entries on the market. I have some complaints about the SD as they kind of went cheap in a few areas compared to the SW series. They did do a few things right on the sd though.... sights being one of them.

So those of you with sigmas out there dont stress out. They are better than most of the stuff on the market now. There are only a few strikers on the maket now I really like...

HKVP.... very nice gun... very accurate...priced reasonable

Ruger American... built tank tough like the old ruger p series guns. Also has a steel subframe and is priced well

Beretta APX... wierd but well made

Taurus 24/7 G2 compact. This is really the budget gun that takes the cake. Well built striker with second strike capability.

Thats about it. Parts are issues with all these as well and what has kept me from diving in. I shoot enough that I want my spare parts on hand and its becoming an issue with most of these newer designs. I am always looking at manufacturers who are consumer friendly. My next pistol with probably be a Bersa thunder 9mm or Beretta for this very reason. At the very least you need a spare extractor, fireing pin, and full set of springs.

I've owned both the SD9 and the M&P. I prefer the 'feel' of the SD9, as well as the tactile finger pads.

I really endorse the M&P 2.0, particularly the 4in Compact 15 rnd model.

I was carrying a H&K VP9 before shooting a M&P 2.0 .....

I have owned an M&P9 since they first came out, about 10years ago. I never could get used to the 2x4 feel of a Glock and never shot them well. When the original all black with a front night sight SD9 came out, I found one on sale for $299 and decided to try it.

Besides the M&P and Glock 17, I also have a Steyr M9-A1. My ex USMC step son brought along his Beretta PX4 and Baby Eagle. We shot all of the, side by side. No malfunctions at all in over 300 rounds, none with any of the pistols. Surprisingly we both were the most accurate with the SD9.

I find the trigger to be fine, very similar to the M&P trigger. The Steyr has the best trigger of the bunch.

These days In full size guns. I own three of the SD9’s and two Steyr 9mm’s.

I haven’t seen an FDE or any other color SD9, the FDE version would be tempting. Academy has an exclusive version for $349, all black with fiber optic sights front and rear.

I picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago for $329. Throw in the $25 rebate / gift card from S&W, and it's a heckuva deal. They also had the VE, but I prefer the all black look and the fiber optic sights are awesome for my old-man eyes.

I've installed the Apex spring kit, did a bit of polishing on the bits, and slapped on some Talon grip tape. I really like the ergonomics, and I can shoot it quite well despite the long trigger pull. That's a surprise for me, since I grew up shooting 1911's and target pistols with crisp SA triggers.

Overall, I'm super happy with it and it carries well in a self-made Kydex holster.

On an interesting-but-unrelated note, I rented a HK VP9 last weekend at the range fully expecting to fall in love with it compared to the SD9. Nope! The VP9 pinched the **** out of my trigger finger with every shot, and I couldn't wait to hand it back. That saved me a chunk of change! LOL
