Default SD 9 front site fell off

Has this ever happened to you? I just purchased a SD 9 gray. Took it to the local gun shop to test it out. It took a little to get used to the trigger, but no big deal. Came home and started to clean the rascal and to my surprise the front site fell off onto my table. What? This can't happen. I didn't try to move it. I just wiped it down. It looks like it was glued in. There was a white-ish substance on the wayward site. Tried to replace it and it went clean thru to the other side of the slide. I called S&W, lady will send me another. It maybe 3 weeks they are out of stock. What say you. Any other members have this happen?

Haven't had one fall off but aftermarket front sights have been quite loose. Does your SD9 have Hi Viz sights or factory? I have several factory front white dot sights laying around if you can't get one from S&W but their customer service has always been good.

Thanks for your kind offer. I have never had any problems with S&W not wanting to fix any thing yet. I hope the sight they are sending me will work fine. The sights are factory white dot.

Many of the recently produced handguns I have seen feature sights that are pressed into a slot or recess. Some of those sights are made of plastic materials (Delrin, whatever). Not surprising when they come loose. Not sure there is a sure-fire method for securing them in place. Might be best to keep an extra on hand, check the sight in use for looseness during cleaning and maintenance, replace when necessary.

Lots of pistols have sights mounted in dovetail grooves cut into the slide. I have seen several shift in position, and a couple that have fallen out completely. Best method for preventing shifting or loss is to lightly peen the edges of the dovetail slot to create a stronger grip on the sight.
