Default New Apex Action Enhancement Kit for the SDVE

Apex has begun advertising their "New Apex Action Enhancement Kit for the SDVE." The kit is claimed to produce "a smoother, lighter trigger pull with less pre-travel and over-travel and an improved reset."

Disclaimer: I am not connected with Apex in any way. I know it is unusual to post new after-market items on this Forum, but for SD9/SD40 owners, after-market items are slim pickings and this is the first new thing I've seen come along for the SD's in a long time. Maybe its not new to everyone, but the email made it sound "new" to me, so I am passing it along.

The kit appears to be the Apex enhanced trigger plus the Apex SD spring kit, with the addition of an Apex Sear Spring. See picture in thumbnail.

The Apex webpage also has direct links to Apex's videos on SD9/40 slide disassembly and frame assembly/disassembly, which may be of use to folks here even if you don't buy the new kit.

It would be interesting to see if anyone has installed this kit, and what the results are for your SD9/40.

I did those upgrades back when they were two separate purchases (Apex spring kit didn’t have a seer spring) plus a seer spring from Galloway. Made a big difference in the trigger pull/action.

T o be picky, the only "new" thing is putting all the pieces in one kit and selling for $55, which is about a $5 reduction.
On the plus side, it is about as good as you can do if you want to improve the SD action above S&W stock parts.
Add in the cost of night sights and it gets close to the cost of an M&P Pro that comes with the goodies installed from OEM.

With the added "benefit" of light primer strikes & ignition failures
due to the lighter striker spring. Just say "no".

So far no light primer strikes with the spring kit. I seem to remember some reason for why not to use the sear spring from Galloway but it is escaping me at the moment. Love the feel of the trigger.

Isn't the Apex Sear Spring a new item in the mix? I don't see it in the Spring Kit on the Apex web page.

I agree with Steve912's comment about NOT lightening a main striker spring. I can accept a trigger that is a little heavier to keep a spring that is guaranteed to do its job. In any case, I would extensively test an after-market lighter striker spring before accepting it as good-to-go for self-defense duties.

I'm against any lightening of OEM striker springs, until
someone finds a stocker that's ridiculously overstrength.

Compared to hammer/firing pin systems, I think striker
systems start off with a much lower margin of adequacy,
for providing adequate primer impact. Start thinning that
margin down--say, by putting in a weaker striker spring
--your getting closer to "failure to ignite" territory.

Strikers seem fairly 'sealed' against junk intrusion, but
junk can get in. I've found gobs of primer shavings,
cut off by sharp edges of the striker's hole in breech face.
Sometimes they collect around the backside of that hole,
cushioning the striker's forward excursion. Sometimes
they migrate from striker bore into the safety plunger
bore, and build up a cushion that resists the full
depression of the plunger--which then drags on the
striker's forward movement, instead of getting out
of it's way--and reduces the striker's impact energy.

I've seen stock pistol's move into misfire territory,
with the OEM spring set. With a lighter striker spring,
the malfunctions would have started earlier--less
reserve energy to overcome system losses.

If a lighter trigger pull is mandatory, periodic clean
out of the striker & striker safety plunger bores should
be a habit.

I would like to install the new Apex flat trigger, but from all I've read, one should leave the springs alone.

Also: There's lots of comment comparing the mods done to the SD bringing it up near M&P pricing. That may be true, but coming from someone that has owned both, I find the ergonomics of the SD are much better than the M&P. YMMV

I agree with you @dogsoldier however, I have replaced all the springs, both sights, and trigger as well as added a rubber grip. I love the feel, ergonomics, and flawless operation but disagree with those saying it's at or above the price of the M&P after upgrades as I'm still below that (that would be true if everyone bought at SRP however I don't buy at SRP and got my new SD9VE for $215). I just wish someone would come out with a trigger bar that would eliminate the take-up at the start of the trigger pull.

I put Apex flat face trigger kit in my 5 inch fde and 2.0 4.25 inch and it is excellent. Reduced travel by 50% and made it even more accurate on range.

Not hard at al to install. I've done it on both my M2.0"s and believe me well worth the price. Apex has a install video and makes it easy.

The only way to make this gun pull smoothly is by polishing parts, Apex claims it's a smoother pull LOL. Lighter pull but not smoother.

I polished everything while I had it apart doing the upgrades and properly lubricated it thoroughly during and after reassembly. For me, after upgrades (including polishing and lubrication) it has a perfect trigger pull (except for the initial take-up). It's smooth, consistent, and just the right resistance... for me.
