Default SW9F recoil spring GUIDE ROD problems

I have a SW9F. Whike field stripping it the other day, the recoil spring assembly came apart. I put it back together, and back in the gun, JUST FINE. The next day, I shot the gun, ONCE. Gun jammed do to different issue with magazine. Anyway to address my magazine/mag well/mag catch issue better I took the slide back off. I also took the recoil assembly back out and the barrel also because I noticed some dirty spots that needed to be wipedone inside the slide the previous day and I just thought I'd get to them later, and now it was later. Anyway fast forward, not too long, and I put the recoil spring assembly back in (what started the problem is this, my fault). I know now, it wasn't seated correctly. I had put it on the first kind of angled part of the barrel block, not the second flat one. When I put the slide back on I'm assuming the guide rod assembly was pushed out of place then the assembly came apart in the gun. After a fight to get the barrel back in to move the slide a little bit to be able to get something to grab a part of the spring then working with it to get it out I was eventually able to get the slide back off. When reassembled the recoil spring assembly he rod didn't snap tight back into the plunger. Didn't think much of it, it was just a little harder to get the assembly back into the slide, but was able to be done.......
OK,
Here we go. When I pull back the slide now, everything is good or it seems, BUT when the slide goes forward, so does the rod. When the slide is closed the rod is almost all the way out of the front of the gun. Luckily I noticed that and didn't (maybe) cause more problems, if I have even really caused a problem yet. Anyway, I can easily push the rod back in, and looks and feels like nothing is wrong. Then I pull back the slide again, comes back fine, again. Let the slide go forward and the same thing again.
Help Please.
What have I done? How can I fix it? How can I keep it from ever happening again? Anything else you would like to imput.
Thanks Everyone in advance.

BTW, (stands up). "Hi my name is Andy. I have a S&W Sigma SW9F problem" (sits down).
New to the forum, at least membership and posting. I have read quite a good bit of the thread though. And after I post this, I will have lost my 'New Thread' virginity. Thank yall for being part of the experience and what fallows.

Seems to me you simply need a new recoil spring assembly (given that it is supposed to be a captive unit).

I always liked the old "F" series of the Sigma. A new recoil spring should help you. This gun is probably over 20 years old. Springs can't last forever.

Call customer service at the mother ship, they might surprise you. Sounds like all you need is a new rcs assembly. Welcome aboard.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Not fixed yet, but at least it seems as though I know what to do now.

i just Purchased a sigma sw9f myself. Got it cleaned by a gunsmith the first time, fired about 75 rounds through it but when i went to put it back together after breaking down the Guide flew out the front and cracked where the two bits come together. Not happy. But if it's as old as my car outside then i can see why such a plastic piece can fail after all that time.

Its fairly common for this to happen. I have experienced it on more than one occasion. Its a badly designed part.

Wolff has a solid steel rod but you cant use factory s&w springs on it.
Ebay seller offers one made of steel that works with the factory spring
Or you can get another assembly from s&w....which will most likely fail again at some point. I have had brand new ones fail while in storage.

Factory set up is the cheapest. Save your old spring as there is probably nothing wrong with it.

Personally I like the wolff setup as you can change out different springs easily but its not a contained system so if that bothers you it probably not worth getting. Its well made and unbreakable when used as designed.
