Default Sd40ve failure to feed

I recently purchased a used sd40ve and shot about 200 rounds and now I have failure to load with full Mass compliant 10 round mags ,I really don't know what the issue is but if I rack the slide one time and take slide off I notice my recoil / guide spring is out of place ? Would this be the reason for the failure to load ? Ive tried different ammo I've cleaned gun ,I've oiled mag and still failure to load /jams , also this is my first handgun and got a good deal on it ,any help would be appreciated thanks and this is my first thread ,should I send it back to Smith and Wesson?

Not likely the recoil rod. I would look at the magazines.

When you say FTL, do you mean the slide rides home on an empty chamber. Failing to strip a round from the mag?

I sent my Sigma 40 and SD40 back to S&W where they did some trigger work and polished the feed ramp so it would go into battery. Since then i have had ZERO problems with it loading.I would give them a call and see what they say...

Not sure about S&W warrantying to second (?) hand purchaser,
someone else can comment on that.

Post up a pic of the slide & recoil spring assy, when it's
"out of place". Previous owner may have installed one
of the aftermarket spring assembly "upgrades", that broke
off pieces of composite frame.

I checked and oiled mags and it still would fail to load /chamber a new round ,seems to do it about every 3-5 rounds ,the rounds will go halfway into chamber and not let slide close ,also noticed if I rack the slide and take slide off the guide rod /recoil spring is out of position sticks up out of the slot ? Anyways I called Smith and they told me to send it in ,now the person that had it before never filled out the warranty card so I did online so hopefully it will be fixed for free if not , I don't mind paying

It had the original recoil spring/guide rod , it was sticking up about halfway from where it should be so I just decided to send it back to Smith and Wesson

No it would strip a round but not go all the way into the chamber ,and it ejected the spent cases perfect , someone else at the range I am a member at looked at it also and he had no idea why it was doing that and he owns the same gun just in 9mm

try cleaning the pistol with attention on the extractor and chamber. Sounds like you extractor is gunked up. Also give the breech face a good scubbing.

Most gun malfunctions are a result of dirty guns in need of cleaning assuming they were running well before. Some people also just spray some oil on without cleaning up the carbon first making the pistol a mess filled with sludge. The oil drys out due to time or heat and you and up with a carbon oil mix with the consistancy of clay.

Most of the modern glock striker type designs are so simple there really isnt any reason not to keep them completely clean all the time. detailed cleaning is easy because the guns are so simple and the parts count is low.

Now if your lazy and hate cleaning guns I get it. Just focus on keeping the upper assembley clean. Extractor, Striker assebly and channel, breech face, and chamber are the main areas. The actual bore of the barrel can go without cleaning.

Thanks for the reply but I definitely clean all my firearms good use hopps bore cleaner in the barrel let it soak ,than brass brush followed by a couple dry patches than a light oil/lube patch down the barrel /chamber .,and I'm very thorough when cleaning all my guns I usually clean them after every time I shoot them but I don't over do it with the oil/lube . The only parts I use oil on is the slide rails and where the barrel meets the slide ,I ended up sending it back to Smith and Wesson and it's gonna arrive back to me tomorrow so 2 1/2 weeks is not bad for a repair ,I asked what they did and it needed barrel ,feed ramp, and chamber polished ,but I'll wait for the invoice slip or my visual inspection and let everyone know what they did .so hoping everything will be fixed gonna take ut to the range as soon as I get it back and run a couple hundred rounds through it too make sure it's good , thank you everyone who responded I really appreciate it as this is my first handgun but not first firearm ,I have a k98 Mauser ww2 bringback ,a type 99 arisaka early war bring back , a pre 64 Winchester 30/30 and a sweet lil Marlin 89c 22 mag fed semi auto rifle (love this lil plinker ) ,again thanks for responding everyone
