Default Any opinions

I recently bought a smith and Wesson SD40. I've been looking around and dont see much to really do with upgrades. I dont really want functioning upgrades as the gun does great
But I would like some cosmetics to spruce up the look. What type of red dots would be able to be mounted to this gun and what other upgrades do you guys maybe know of that I cant find. Thanks!

Welcome to the board. The SD line is a very basic line of handguns. I had a SD9 and loved it, but traded up to get a M&P.

If you want red dot sights on your SD you'd have to find one that can mill your slide and the re-finish it.

I wouldn't do that since it can be very pricey. If you want a red dot I'd look for a used M&P Core or something. If you SD does great leave it as is for carry or around the house.

Just my opinion of course.

There aren’t going to be a lot of accessories on an entry level gun when a small amount of $ puts you into a M&P. The SD is fine and I have on but had to do the trigger before I could like it.

Forget about adding a Red Dot, not only is the SD40 not setup to take a Reflex Sights, but you'd need to consult a gunsmith to make it optics ready, and that would be a costly endeavour, but would also be completely out of the question given the whole COVID-19 situation.

That being said, as far as upgrades go, the Sigma Series is a simple pistol, and therefore your approach towards aftermarket modifications should also be simple. There's no sense in dumping a lot of money into a value-priced line of firearms and most of the available upgrades for the Sigma Series are unnecessary or otherwise detrimental anyway.

For example, stay away from trigger upgrades, as they often come at the cost of reduced reliability, and stay away from steel guide rods as they're known to damage the frame over time because the SD wasn't designed for them. As a result, these upgrades also tend to void the warranty when installed. In fact, I have a suspicion that a fair amount of reported reliability issues among latterday Sigmas is due to aftermarket modifications.

I've only made two modifications to my SW40VE, the addition of a Meprolight Tru-Dot front sight and an aluminum backplate. The SD40 already has a tritium front sight by default, (unless its a VE model) so obviously you don't need that, and the backplate on mine was purely cosmetic, so you don't need to do that either unless you want to, and that'll set you back $15 at most.

I've only done two mods to my SD .40 VE. The first is an end piece engraved with "Death Before Dishonor, and an extended slide lock lever that is worth it's weight in gold.

The best thing you can do to your SD40 is to add an extended take down lever. Believe me, your fingertips will thank you. Below is a pic of my SD9.

Agree with the others -- it's a great basic pistol -- but not worth investing in milling the slide for a reflex sight (red dot).

I like the improved, slightly wider take-down lever as a cheap but very useful addition.

As for the trigger... and lighter springs... those are sort of a 50:50 proposition. You can spend $50+ on these things, and not get that much out of it. If you want to do it to experiment and learn how to take the pistol apart and put back together, okay then. But the SD's are a great value proposition if you take them as they come: reliable, reasonably accurate, inexpensive (cheap) guns for plinking and self-defense.

If you are looking for a great range gun, or a competition gun, where investing more money will improve the platform, then perhaps upgrade to the M&P platform and build on that...

Looks like the reflex sight comes with a dovetail mount that replaces your rear sight...

It will probably be "as good as" any other $70 optic. Don't expect it to necessarily hold a zero for very long: supposedly weighs "8 oz."! It may work OK for you... Let us know.

Good luck!

As soon as it gets to my FFL, I have an SD40 FDE to add to my SD family. Already have an SD FDE, SD9VE and SD40VE. All are bone stock and will remain that way, the SD9VE has about 2,000 rounds through it with no issues at all. The SD9 FDE trigger is as good as the 9VE after 2,000 rounds, so maybe S&W improved on the trigger, since that is the biggest gripe people have. I've never had issue with the trigger, since I grew up shooting double action revolvers. If you want to mod a pistol very much, I'd go with the M&P series and you might as well go with the 2.0 models. Just my opinion.
The SD series pistols are a great value, reliable and accurate (for me anyway) for their intended purpose. :-)

I've been considering the dovetail reflex sight as my eyes are old. ADE has a good reflex for 65 bucks that should work. I'll let you know when I get it installed and tested.

Since they come with the built in accessory rail, you can go with a light/laser combo as a home defense option quite easily.

The sight/base you mentioned looks like it should work well if you want to go that route, as someone else mentioned, just question the quality of a sight and base that cheap. But sometimes you can be surprised.

Add some night sights to it. Night sights that fit the M&P will also fit your gun. An extended slide lever is about the BEST accessory you can add to your gun. Also, you might consider painting the etched lettering on the slide. In the pic below you can see how I painted my lettering with white nail polish. I think it adds character. The trigger pull weight on mine was 7.5 lbs. from the factory. I added the APEX trigger spring kit and it brought it down to 5.5 lbs. After shooting over 1K rds. thru it I have yet to have a FTF or FTE with the spring kit installed. My trigger is very crisp and very smooth.
