The only difference is the style of the rolemarks on top, otherwise they're completely interchangeable.

Related question: Will an SW357V barrel function properly and safely (for use with 357 Sig ammo) in an SD40VE pistol?

Years ago, I was told probably not without modifications, but it wouldn't hurt to ask again.

That I don't know.

The thing is that the Gen 2 SW357V wasn't quite the same as the later Gen 3 VE models, but I don't know the extent of said differences. I presume that it would work because the barrels don't appear any different at a glance, but then again, Glock barrels nor M&P barrels look all that different at a glance either, and dispite what some folks on the internet claim, Glock barrels will not in fact function in a Sigma.

That being said, it probably isn't a good idea to go shooting .357 SIG out of an SD40VE regardless. .357 SIG Conversion Barrels may be popular aftermarket options for a lot of .40cal pistols, but the fact of the matter is that the .357 SIG operates at significantly higher chamber pressures compared to .40 S&W, ergo it takes more than a mere barrel swap for an ordinary .40cal pistol to handle a steady diet of .357 SIG.

For reference here, the .40 S&W operates at a peak chamber pressure of 35,000psi as per SAAMI Specifications, whereas the .357 SIG operates at 40,000psi, and 10mm Auto operates at 37,500psi. In other words, .357 SIG operates at even higher pressures than even the mighty 10mm Auto.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that the slide weight of the SD40VE is considerably lighter than that of the SW357V, meaning that if you fired .357 SIG out of a SD40VE the slide velocity would be higher, which would need to be compensated for with a heavier springs to help reduce said slide velocity.

Last but not least, keep in mind that the M&P357 was taken out of production after several trips back to the mother ship due to issues that Texas Rangers were having with the pistols which S&W was unable to resolve, and the M&P is a more robust design than the Sigma Series to begin with.

In closing, if you want to shoot .357 SIG, then I would sooner recommend investing in a SIGsauer or even (dun dun duuunnn) a Glock 31/32 than trying to track down a SW357V barrel and hoping that it will function as a drop in part for a SD40VE. Trust me, I would love to be able to convert my SW40VE to .357 SIG myself and even looked into the matter myself, and this was a conclusion that I reached based on my findings.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for laying it out like that. I know a dealer with SW357V parts leftover from a police department demilled SW357V pistol... and I own a badly "used & abused" SW40VE pistol that used to belong to one of the NE Patriots (apparently a very clumsy one!). Hence, my interest in whether or not the two would work together.

I'm also one of those first generation M&P40 owners that bought a Smith & Wesson 357SIG barrel from MidwayUSA when they were closing them out. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but after several cautionary forum posts, I decided not to use it.

Should a good opportunity ever present itself, I probably would pickup a used all-metal Sig pistol in 357SIG just for the Hell of it. But no immediate plans to do that.

It's a shame that the SW357V had such a limited production run and that those who own them don't seem to do much shooting with them or talk about them in detail much, as I would be interested to know more about them. How well they run, how well they hold up over time, what differences there are between it and the SW40V in terms of spring weights, etc.

That being said, if someone is offering you a SW357V barrel at a good price, then you may want to take them up on the offer due to their rarity, and you could always contact S&W for information regarding spring weights on the SW357V that way aid you in successfully converting a SW40VE to .357 SIG. Heck, they may even still have some old SW357V parts on hand to sell you. I don't want to discourage you from doing this, especially if it's something that you would enjoy, I'm just saying that I wouldn't attempt to drop a SW357V barrel into a SW40VE and take it out shooting. With a will there's a way, so as long as you're willing to do some research in order to figure out how one might safely convert a SW40VE to .357 SIG, you can do it.

Oh, and by the way, of all the things I've heard about M&P357s, none of them had anything to do with safety, merely reliability, and only after a certain volume of rounds have been fired, so if you want to take your M&P to the range and shoot some .357 SIG out if it, then you don't have to worry about it detonating in your hand or anything.
I honestly think that S&W dropped the M&P357 because it merely wasn't profitable enough for them to attempt to diagnose the issue or experiment until they uncovered a solution. It probably just needed heavier springs or more frequent replacement of the springs it already had. There are many folks here on the M&P forums who still shoot their M&P357s as well as converted M&P40s without any issues, so they seem to have figured out how to keep them running smoothly and you could always post a thread there asking for some information on the subject.

At one point, I had a chance to buy a used SW40V from my favorite local dealer (sadly, one now out-of-business). That convert to 357SIG would have been a no-brainer with the parts I had access to. Unfortunately, my favorite local dealer thought that old SW40V he had was made of gold and had priced it accordingly! Holy cow!

He had that gun the entire time he was in business and still had that gun when he went out of business. It didn't even sell it during his very aggressive "going-out-of business" sale.

Where is it today? Who knows?

Yeah, I'll never understand these sorts of folks who are so convinced that something they possess is worth a particularly high amount of money and stubbornly cling to the belief that regardless of how many people pass on buying it that eventually somebody will come along who will happily pay the posted price.

I remember there was sort of a running joke on the Taurus forums regarding an overpriced PT1911 with a really ugly Red & Gold custom Cerakote job which would repeatedly show up on different auction sights for $900+, which needless to say, never sold, but the guy just kept on trying, and new users kept posting new threads about it.
Ordinarily, a Taurus PT1911 runs about $500 new, but this guy thought that his used PT1911 with a really hideous custom Cerakote job was worth $900+!

This thing really needs to be seen to be believed, so I went ahead and hunted down a pic of it.

Well, that is a common trait among dealers, for at least 70% of the ones in my area. They set a price and that is it. Doesn't matter if the gun sits there forever. You can still manage to get maybe 10% off if you bargain hard enough, but you aren't going to find a crazy over-priced gun and get it down to market... not usually anyway. There are exceptions of course, but they are rare in my experience. Massachusetts doesn't have pawn shops that handle firearms, so the gun dealers here have something of a monopoly on used guns.

More than once, I offered that dealer a very respectable price for his used SW40V and he wouldn't budge. That's funny because we did a whole lot of business together. It was just one of those things that makes you go hmmmm.

My brother bought an aftermarket .357 sig for his Sigma 40V. It now resides in his Sigma 40E, not sure if that helps or not. Don't recall if we tried it in the SD or not.

I do not know if it is the barrel or the design, but his barrel will on occasion not feed Speer Gold Dots (same in both guns), but it always is flawless with FMJ Truncated cone bullets. I haven't tried out XTPs in it yet. Oh, and I did put a mirror finish on the feed ramp to make sure it wasn't friction.

I had tried the SD9 bbl in the SD40 and vice versa, but they were not the same, seems like the SD9 had a narrower hood than the 40.

I just tried a SD40 barrel in my really old Sigma 40v which I bought in like 95-97 or so. Both barrels seem to operate perfectly in the other gun. The SD40 bbl was a tad tight when racking in the Sigma, but that would clear up with shooting. I could not see anything visually different in how the set in each slide. We will be trying the 357 sig Sigma barrel in the SD40 now.
