Just purchased sd9ve. It has scratches on top and side of square part of barrel.
I think its the lug or breach. Seems to hit the top of slide when racking or something. Wishing id spent a lil extra on g19 right about now. This gun is brand new. Ive fired like 15 rounds so far. Pretty disgruntled with smith and wesson right now. Can i demand a refund? Not really trying to trust my life if it is defective.

I bought one new also. Took it to the range and the front sight fell off. I didn't care for the trigger either. I gave it away.

The hood of the barrel locks the slide in battery. It moves down when the slide moves to the rear. The mating of the surfaces is completely normal. Look at any semiauto with a similar locking system and you will see wear.

All pistols in the Sigma Series wear like this. Heck, my M&P40 Shield has similar wear on the barrel hood and all I've done with it is work the slide a few hundred times, haven't even shot it yet.
If it bothers you, then get some 3M Scotchbright ultra-fine automotive pads and polish the barrel hood until it has a nice smooth satin finish.

That’s typical wear for those guns. Keep in mind that these aren’t high end guns: you probably bought yours at least partly because of the lower price.
Has no impact on the reliability of functionality of the gun.

Yep, for the record, most firearms show signs of wear on mating surfaces in short order, unless the metal has some high tech wonder coating or surface treatment to the metal. The SD9VE is just bare Stainless Steel (which isn't a particularly hard steel to begin with) which has been bead-blasted to make the surface produce less glare in direct sunlight, so it's going to show wear more quickly than something that has been Cerakoted or case-hardened.
Fortunately, Stainless Steel can be easily polished by hand, so if you can't stand the sight of those scratches, then you can just polish out the scratches and leave the barrel with a more lustrous satin finish which makes future wear less visible.

Mine wore the same way, 2300 rounds ago. I trust my life to my SD9VE and the lives of family and friends.

Normal, but is that a new barrel design? My SD9VE doesn't have anything written on the side of the breech. It only has "-9 MM-" on the top.
Not mine, but it looks like this.

My Sigma, which is what the SD9VE is essentially, wears the same way. It doesn't affect function in the least. Other than the lousy trigger, which I fixed for $20 with an Apex trigger spring kit, it's an outstanding gun. It's a natural pointer because the grip angle is the same as a 1911. Far better than a Glock, IMHO.

That doesn't look that bad. I would be more worried about peen marks on the barrel hood, if you see that, you would have issues.

You're more than welcome to spend more on a Glock 19, but it'll look exactly the same.

Well, on a GLOCK's (Tenifer, nitrided, etc.?) barrel there would be more obvious indications.
Cheers!
P.S. That wear looks 100% normal to me. Polishing with a little Mother's or like product can often work wonders. The top of the barrel hood is also a location where I typically put a small dab (very small) of 100% silicon grease. It is also what I typically use on slide rails, again, in very small applications.
