Default 1006, is it a shooter?

I'm considering buying a 1006. Does anyone know if this is more of a collector's item or a shooter?

Have had mine for years. It is certainly a shooter. Do not know what the value is but that is not why I bought it.

And the size and weight of the full size 1006 helps tame the recoil if full power 10mm loads.

Here are my suggestions:

Buy it
Shoot it
Love it
Shoot it some more
And some more
And VOW TO NEVER SELL IT!!!!

Post back after you buy it and shoot it. And we'll need pictures too. :-)

Interesting. A guy has one for sale on a site and in his description claims "not a shooter, collector's item". Read this and decided to do my homework before taking the plunge. Appreciate the feedback.

Sounds like a plan. Will post when I get it. It's going to be a few months, waiting for a purchase order to process. Yes, I live in a restrictive state/city but that doesn't stop me from exercising my constitutional rights.

Good luck Bronxhunter. I hope the purchase works out for you! I'd buy several if I could afford them. :-)

Here's another thought too... 10mm ammo is not cheap and not always easy to find. If you reload or know someone who reloads .40 you can spin the same dies out a tad and load your own 10mm ammo. That will make it more affordable AND you can tailor your loads in case you want or need a 10mm load that is a little lighter.

I've enjoyed watching the distance the 1006 will throw casings between 165 and 180 grain loads and hot rounds versus target loads. This pistol is loads of fun!!!!!

It's both.

A collector for when the anti-gun girlfriend sees it.

A shooter when her violent ex BF kicks in your door.

I actually had the same dilemma and found one NIB even with the original inspection sticker still on it. Can't bring myself to shoot it. Luckily, I stumbled onto another one a little more respectable used. I bought it to shoot

I bought mine used, so the choice was easy. If it were brand new in the box, that decision would be harder. They are going for big money right now, but so are Colt Delta Elites. If you are looking for a 10mm to shoot, and have tons of fun, I would definitely suggest a 1006.

I bought my 1006 used but it was in excellent condition and I started shooting it right away. I shoot all my pistols and revolvers no matter how "collectible" they may or may not be.
The 1006 is one of my best shooters, right up there with my 1911 Colt Gold Cup. The 1006 is built like a tank and is really a pleasure to shoot and the recoil even with hot loads is VERY manageable. Once you shoot it you'll know what we are talking about. 10mm rocks!

I recall someone posting on the "10" forum, if you don't bother to shoot yours - you should be shot.

I personally can't imagine buying a weapon and not shooting it. What's the point? Buy it, shoot it, lavish loving care on it, and don't look back.

Buy it!! Then buy a good size gun safe, because you'll need it for the rest of the third gen smiths you'll end up buying after you shoot this one.

I saw the same one on armslist, the guy wants $1200 for it which I think is a bit too high, even though it's supposedly "new". But then what do I know, I am a cheapskate!

$1200. What has he been smokeing? This afternoon my gun show pard and I went to the Germantown, TN show. I got a near new 1006 and 1076. The 1076 came with box, papers and three mags (Two NIB). The 1006 came with eight mags and nothing else. Grand total for both guns was $900.

Other ways to look at it: I bought a 1076 and a 1006 for $450 a piece and the seller threw in $330 worth of mags (11 mags x $30 per mag.)

Or, I paid $285 each for the 1076 and 1006 and $30 per mag.

Still a good deal for me how ever you want to look at it.

If you ask me, "Choot 'em". Nothing like the recoil impulse from a full bore 10mm.

Now to find a 1046, the only "Collector" in the S&W 10XX family

Wow, what a smoking deal you got there! You need to post some pictures of them. I thought I got a great deal on mine when I got it 2 years ago for $525 with 6 magazines. Ya did good, my friend!

Here they are. Top left is the box for the 1076. Top right is the 1076. Bottom left is the 1066 I have had for a few years, and yes I know it has those nasty Houge grips installed. Bottom right is the 1006.
