Default Magazine rattle???

Ok heres the deal. A few weeks ago I got a sigma .40. Anyways, I started loading the mags and after about 9 rounds it started to rattle like theres a round loose in there. It still fired fine and didnt seem to have any effect on the gun but it drives me crazy!! I posted this on my local gun forum and no one really have a right on answer. The only thing I really learned is this has happened to many people with several differant brands of hand guns. I hope this isnt some sort of repost, I searched and didnt find anything. Anyways... any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Zac

Yep its normal. Mags some do this when partly loaded. I think its because the follower isn't as wide as the mag tube in the main part as will move side to side when shaken.

It only does it with about 9 or more rounds. 8 or less and its fine. Is there a fix for this...??

I just got a couple M&P40 FS mags for my Compact, I noticed this pretty quickly. It IS very annoying, but as long as it doesn't affect function I suppose I can live with it. Unless there's a fix...

When you say 9 or more rounds are you saying it rattles with twelve rounds?

Ok, heres a break down...

It starts to rattle at 8 rounds and only does it when theres an even number of rounds in there. The more rounds that are in the mag, the more it sounds like multiple rounds are loose. So I dont know if the rounds arnt seating in the mag correctly or what.

My Glock 22 mags use to do that but I switched to Wolff +10% mag springs and the rattle was no longer there.

Fergedaboudit. Not uncommon with variety of autos; not to worry.

Same concept as mine but it starts with 11 (maybe before but I didn't pay attention until then) and rattles with odds. Sometimes I can give it the good ol mag slap and it isn't as bad.

Learn something new everyday.
When I read your first post I picked up my Sigma magazines and shook them and no rattle.
I started removing them one at a time and after two got the rattle.

To me it seems more prevalent with double stack mag's than single stack mags.

Well like I said, it doesnt seem to be uncommon I just dont like it. I love the gun either way however it is the first semi auto Ive ever owned that has dont this. Which also surprises me since its more common than I thought.

Default Mag Rattle Issues

Ok, my thought is that as long as the magazine feeds like it is supposed to 100% of the time who really cares if it rattles a little? Not to mention this is usually when the magazine is in your hand as opposed to bullets down in a mag pouch or more importantly while properly seated in your pistol.

One other thing to note... When the magazine is seated in the pistol with the slide down, a full magazine shouldn't rattle as the magazine spring is compressed about as far as it will go with the top round resting under the slide.

And for those who worry about tactical issues, if your rattling magazine is heard while you are going after bad guys maybe you shouldn't be walking around shaking your magazine or your pistol.

Probably the reason mine never rattles as it is loaded and my spare mag is always full.
