Default Tell me about the S&W #5946

My favorite shop took the above gun in trade. No box, three mags, stainless finish. It is suposed to be DAO however it doesn't work like my three Sig DAO pistols. The trigger pulls once unless the slide is worked again. Overall the pistol is in excellent condition, the price is $350.00 and I honestly am trying to talk myself out of it.

I don't talk myself out of much, that needs work.

I bought one. Compared to my two 5906's, I thought the DOA trigger sucked and quickly sold it.

I have a 5946 and it's a solid pistol that has been used by law enforcement. Other than being a bit on the heavy side, it's a great pistol. I believe most people find the "round trigger guard" version is more desireable. If it's in excellent condition and the 3 mags are the hi-cap 15rd-ers, then that's a pretty good price from what I've seen used ones sell for.

That's strange, because my 5906 has the absolutely best DA trigger if any semiauto I've ever shot, or even handled.

I was assuming that S&W 9MM DAO's would have that wonderful smooth and light DA trigger.

Company lawyers telling S&W how to manufacture their DAO semiauto's?

I had one for a number of years. They are good shooting pistols. The trigger is the equivalent of a SIG DAK trigger or other "fast action" trigger where the hammer is already half way back when you start pulling the trigger.

The only thing about them is they are very heavy and when you slide 15 rounds of 9 into the handle they are even heavier. For a range gun or house gun they are fine. For a concealed carry gun they are too heavy, but I carried mine a lot.

I recently bought a 5946 and the trigger was a bit heavy, I decided to try a basic trigger job before getting a lighter mainspring.
I just spent about an hour on it and it responded suprisingly well. To the point where I think I'll stick with the factory spring...

That's how it's supposed to work. The previous cycle of the gun half-cocks the mechanism. No double-strike capability. Some Smith DAOs have a really nice trigger, some not as much.

Most folks think that the hardcore look on the face of RCMP "Mounties" is grit and determination. Nope, its the weight of that 5946 and extra mags

These things are a real bargin. Mine needed a good cleaning, and some lube. With the addition of some lighter Wolff springs it's a great shooter.

Mike, what weight hammer spring are you running? Any reliability issues?

I talked myself out of it...I was getting stronger.

Then I found a Kimber Custom Royal .45 a.c.p. in another one of their stores and asked the manager to have it shipped here to Atlanta for me.

A month later, the shop still has the S&W #5946 9mm. I now have it on lay-a-way. Do not really need it, but that never really stopped me from buying a gun.

I prefer my 5946 to my 5906. The DAO trigger is smooth and relatively light. Very nice piece, and $350 is a good deal with 3 mags. You did well.

I enjoy my 5946 and don't think the trigger is too bad, of course I shoot my HK USP pistol double action first shot and that is a tough trigger so I don't mind the Smith at all. I don't carry it so weight is not a factor. I just think it makes a great nightstand gun. Love mine.

I picked up the S&W #5946 this evening. The guy who traded it in returned with the box and papers, so that was a plus. The box is marked "New York PD" with product code 108569. SCSW #3 shows the NY PD guns as having product code 198569. There are no LE markings on the gun, nor does it show signs of much use. Does anyone have any idea about this gun?

I need a holster for this gun, anybody have a favorite?

NYPD guns are not marked as police property in any way because they are the property of the officer, not the department. The box for mine lists the product code as 149332, I have no idea how the product codes work for these.

If it's an NYPD gun, the mag disconnect should be disabled. Don't know if that's a plus for you or not. I really like my 5903, though.

Default 5946

I decided to buy one and try it out. I bought a police trade in.................HOLY smokes..very accurate, smooth trigger, I fell in love. I shoot Sig Sauer P226's, 1911 and a Browning Hi Power.

Now I am used to shooting revolvers so this is up my alley. It's like having a revolver that shoots 15 rounds.

I am very used to single action 1911 and Hi Power.

I am wearing it off duty today...very comfortable (IWB holster.)

I got mine for $299.00. I LOVE IT.
