Default Price Check on S&W 745

I found a 745 locally and was wondering if this is a good 45 from S&W. I haven't heard much about this model. It has a slight amount of bluing wear on the slide both sides of the muzzle, and a little by the ejection port. Comes with 2 factory mags, and the original box. Here is a pic:

I can't help with a price, except to suggest checking completed auctions on GB. I had one for years, and my daughter was so fond of it, I finally gave it to her. I sometimes wish I hadn't. As far as I know, these don't go for big bucks. I suspect they have a value of $500 or less even in the current market. They are a fine gun. If you can buy it right, I wouldn't hesitate.

I took a look at GB and found that the few that had actually sold went for a bit under $500. There is an IPSC version, that AFAIK differs only in the markings. These guns were popular in IPSC for a while. They were supposed to compete with the 1911's but I guess we know which one won out.

The gun seems like a fine firearm, came across this in my search for a 4566, 4566tsw, or 4506. It looked to have been fired very little, and I liked the fact that it came with the original box and 2 mags. Really just looking for a quality target shooting 45, something that will be a good lasting pistol. However, the current price tag is a couple hundred more than I have been seeing 4566's and 4506's go for on GB. So I think I will pass on it in my search for a 4566.

If you are looking for a target pistol, the 745 is it. Don't know if you realize the 745 is a single action version of the 645. If you indeed want a target gun, a 745 would likely serve you better than the other models you mention. You don't say what the price of this gun is, and if the price were wishful thinking, I would pass too. If you can buy it for $450-475, it's a good buy.

I paid $500 for mine with the box about 15 years ago and it based on what I have seen they are still hovering around that mark.

For the money they are a really good target pistol. The trigger on mine is unbelievable and the gun is accurate.

I paid $500 for mine with the box about 5 years ago. Any that I have seen for sale around here have been asking $700.

The one I posted is in excess of $700 I believe, plus I'd have to do a FFL transfer. So from your posts I'd say it is excessively priced.

I bought mine some years ago for less than $500, I have the IPSC version. As far as target guns go, it is pretty good. It won't outshoot a $2000 longslide 1911, but it will outshoot any other gun I have in that price range.

I think that for $700 it would have to be NIB and delivered to your door. Still wouldn't be a great price. Those guns were pretty expensive new, but their resale has been pretty weak. They are good guns, far better than their secondary market pricing indicates.

Walked into a local store that had this for $699.00 for months. They reduced it to $350.00 and I was there to grap it. I bought a one new in the 80's and loved it, but needed to fund a more accurate bullseye gun.
They shoot great and feed anything. I just weighed the trigger at 3.5#. I'm glad to have another 745 back in the stable. I went about a year and a half without buying a gun and then bought 3 in a little over a month!

Sounds like you were in the right spot at the right time Ignatz. If it was priced at $350 it would be a no brainer decision for me. Guess will have to keep checking in on it periodically. Maybe the price will drop.

I paid something like $349 for my 10th Anniversary IPSC virtually NIB with all papers and cleaning rod etc.. I had seen it in the case at the shop tucked away in the back and had never asked to see the price assuming it to be very expensive. I was into acquiring police trade-in 2nd and 3rd Gens at the time and let it pass. Then one day I asked to see it, saw the price, and never put it back down. As it turned out, when the trigger was pulled the hammer would only fall to half-cock. A quick $40 repair by my smith and the gun was 100%.

It's an interesting gun, but I think that I prefer my 645 by a good bit. Still, its a keeper. The 10th Anniversary seem to go for a good deal more, but I could live without the billboard.

Considering the pic you posted is from a current GB auction, I take it you have looked there...his price for buy now is simply ridiculous

Yeah and I have looked at it in the shop. The Buy Now price is around 50% more than I think he has it stickered in shop. He has had the gun since at least February. I guess we know the reason why. Maybe closer to the holiday's he might be willing to part with for less. Never know.

I paid $500 with box, 2 mags and extra BarSto Barrel. Around here people are offering them for $650 but I don't think they are selling for that price.

It is the best .45 I have shot. But I don't have that much experience: Colt Series 70 and Kimber SS target II.

It seems to me it is better than most 1911's up to about $1500.

If he will let it go for 5-ish I think you would love it. It's a match grade 645 if I am correct and my 645 is super accurate as it is.

Were these pistols known for unusual accuracy, or has this been just my experience.

Also, does the odd barrel bushing have something to do with it?

Default 745 Barrel Bushing

I just joined the forum awhile back. The barrel on the 745 is called a coned barrel. In other words, the barrel is fit to a fixed bushing on the slide rather then to a separate bushing like the Colt 1911 or SW 52. I assume this was done for keeping the cost down. Eventually it will wear out and have to be replaced.

The 745 is basically a SW 39 in 45 caliber. I like my 745 because it fits my hand, is well balanced and I can hold it rock steady.

Put one on lay-away today. It's priced for $375.00. Feels very good in my hand, nice balance, good trigger and shoots well (took it out for a test drive). It needs to be in my safe.

Unless it's been dragged behind a truck, that's a real good price. Those were very expensive guns when new.

Good to know. I've wanted one of the older S&W autos in my safe for a few years. I'm a big revolver guy, but the 1st and 2nd Generation S&W autos go back to my childhood. Guess it's nostalgia.
