Default Plastic floorplate for 39-2 magazine?

I recently traded for some 9 round magazines for the 39-2. Just for fun, I put the plastic floorplate on my original 8 round magazine and inserted it into the gun. I really had to slam the magazine in there but the magazine caught. Has anyone else replaced the metal floorplate with the plastic one on their 8 round magazines? I like the idea of having one less thing to keep oiled as my experience has shown S&W blued magazines seem to rust quite easily.

Thanks,
Jeff

The later magazines that use the plastic baseplates have slightly longer mag bodies than the original model 39 magazines. You will most likely end up damaging the baseplates in the long run using them like this. You should stick with the metal baseplates with the original magazines.

The plastic baseplate shown in this picture closes the visible gap when using the longer mag bodies in the model 39 but, unfortunately, S&W no longer makes them.

they still list that replacement 39 series 9 rounder with the plastic baseplate on their website as being available.

Product: 39 Series Stainless Steel Magazine, 9RD

the slightly longer bodies, a different follower, and a different spring give it that extra round.

The specific stepped plastic baseplate I was referring to is no longer available as on the 3rd mag below.
The currently produced mags use the baseplate as on the 4th mag below.

Ah, I gotcha! My 9 rounder is even different. Un-stepped floorplate, and 9 witness holes for the rounds. And a red follower. Maybe 6-8 years old?
