Default 4506 LAPD commemorative

Hi Guys,
What do you know about this model? I've seen a couple with a blued engraved slide and a stainless frame. I understand 500 were made. Were these custom fitted guns? Do these command substantial prices?

Thanks in advance!

If they are like the Sacramento P.D. Commemoratives they are standard off the line guns that are engraved the S.P.D. guns were all 1 of 200 in both 4 & 6 inch.I got 2 of each and gave them to my Sons and kept a 4 & 6 for myself in 1984 they were $400.00 each and they are shooting guns for me I have no queens in my safe. The only thing I had done was a Combat Tune by Bill Davis Co.

Don't know about the gun you're talking about, but S&W has done "special" guns from time to time.

Here's one made for the Tulsa Oklahoma Sheriff's Department.

I carried it as my duty gun.

There are at least 2 that have been on Gunbroker as long as I can remember. I personally don't care for markings/engravings, but of course that's just me. The 4506 even has a friken LAPD badge on the grip.

Default LA Police 65th Anniversary Model 4506

Did anyone respond that they have one of these, or know the value of these?

To the average shooter, the price is probably about the same as regular 4506s or 4566s.

My impression is, most shooters don't assign much extra value to these pistols -- unless they're members of the LEO agencies represented in the special editions.

In fact, in some cases, it might even detract from the value of the gun. I know it would with me...

Some folks like to collect marked PD/Sheriff guns. I have two, but hope to god I don't get bit by that bug.

Heck, I'd have thought RODNEY KING would have snapped that one up a long time ago...

CDNN had them for what seemed to be a long time for $700.

Here is my Dad's DPD Smith from 1981. The buckle came with his badge number in it. The buckle was stolen a few years back. I added mine and will have his number placed on it. This gun has never been fired.

Commemorative? I was lucky enough to find the real deal at a local gun shop in Simi Valley, California (sometimes called the Cop Land of LAPD) a couple of years ago. It's a 4506-1 with adjustable night sights ordered shortly after .45s became authorized (not issued) for purchase and carry by LAPD officers in early 1997. This was after the North Hollywood Shootout in February of that year when LAPD brass finally listened to numerous requests by the rank and file that they be authorzied to carry .45s.

The pistol has wear consistent with extended carry in a duty hoster (I put on a new wrap around grip).

S&W Model 4506-1 Stainless Steel Double Action .45 Pistol, Special Order Los Angeles Police, caliber .45 ACP

With original box

Right side

Left side . . . and it shoots good, too

And, of course, those factory adjustable night sights (I had stripped the slide down for cleaning)

I've seen those pistols (4506-1) in the engraving broshure and I think they're beautiful but I wouldn't want the commemorative stuff since I'm somewhat of a scofflaw. I always thought that they (4506) lent themselves particularily well to engraving and that would be my ultimate .45: 4506- no dash fully engraved, with my initials (which are the same as my father and son) AND some cool custom grips! But HEY! I'm just a lowly troll.

P.S. Can one shoot the heck out of engraved guns or is that silly? (i'm serious)

So, back in 2000, if you pre-ordered a 4506 LAPD commemorative it was 969.00?
Anyone know what was the average gun store price back in 2000 for a 4506?

Default S&W LAPD 4506

To Answer what I can about your Question. I own a LAPD 4506. These were sold at the academy, They Made 500 of them. I own Serial Number 33. It does not appear as these weapons were Hade Fitted. The Fit is the same as you would find in a standard 4506. The Engraving is as nice as I have seen on other limited production Weapons. The Cost of this item was 895.00 when I purchased it. The Standard duty issue 4506 was going for 795.00 at the same time. I purchase this weapon back in 2001. It has never been fired (except to test firing at the factory) Since My Purchase I have not seen any of these surface else where.

I would agree with the comment about smith commemorative auto values, the have never really caught on. Personally, I searched for quite awhile to find a CHP 1006. I guess you could say it's just a personal thing. If my 90 man department had commissioned a commemorative, I would have bought one.

Now that made a nice presentation case. It is almost too nice to be on display. I would most likely put it in a safe and never give others a chance to get their hands on it.

I think Department marked guns are more attractive to those working for that Department. They hold no special meaning and actually sell for a little less on the used market. The collector market is too small to make any impact in value.

I have one that I purchased from the police academy in 2000. Never been out of the box except to reflect on pleasant memories.

Most LEO agency commemorative firearms really only have to members of the agency. I have my U.S. Customs Patrol Officer Model 19 S&W, and my U.S. Customs Special Agent Colt Series 70 government model 1911. I served in both positions during my career.

Soon the Retired Agents Association is doing a Gen 3 Glock 19 available to former agents only. It will come with you badge and name engraved on them. Since we transitioned into DHS/ICE, they are also offering the same Gen 3 Glock 19 with your ICE badge and name engraved on it. For legacy agents such as myself, we can order both pistols. Hopefully they will be delivered early March.
