Default S & W 3953 Experts?

I just picked up a 3953 with box and papers. The box is factory marked; "S&W 3953 9mm 3 1/2 SS DEMO". When I disassembled this pistol to clean it I noticed the slide was marked "MOD 6946". I will call S&W Monday to learn if this gun is safe to shoot. I searched this forum and found some references to similiar slide interchanges, but I wasn't convienced by these discussions of any conclusion.
Is there a 3rd generation auto expert out there that might want to weigh in on what I have?

If you look at the factory parts lists, you will find that the slides for both models have the same number.
