457 and 4516
I have a 457 and a 4516-1.
It appears to me that the slides should be interchangeable. Anyone know if they are?
The stainless slide on the black frame would make for a nice gun.

I'd advise checking with S&W, to be sure.

You won't break anything by trying to line up the slides onto the frames. I've put a 6946 slide onto my 908 frame and it appears to work, though it puts it in SAO with no safety so I wouldn't carry it that way. It appeared to work though. Was mostly curious.

Doubt it. My 915 and 5906 slides will not interchange.

So I tried this over the weekend when I had both pistols out.
The 4516 slide will fit on the 457 frame, and seems like it would function. All controls seemed to work - I did not fire the combo. It was actually quite attractive looking, stainless slide on a black alloy frame.
The 457 slide fit on the 4516 frame, but did not function. When the slide was pulled back, the recoil spring would not force it into battery.
Oh well - just thought I would update anyone who was curious.

Would a 3913 slide work on a 3914 frame? I like two tone guns, so this is some thing I might try.

Try it. You never know.
However, I would get the slide or frame refinished.
I am a hopeless tinkerer but do not mismatch slides/frames after a disasterous and expensive experiment with 1911s went bad.
At least not until I get a shop indoors and quit drinking beer while tinkering.

I too like two tone guns. Here is what I did instead of changing slides I went the Mothers mag polish route.M&P9c.
I do not carry but the finish is now bulletproof and I can haul it now in the truck and not worry about scratches.

It works fine. I wanted a longer sight radius on a 6906, and added a 5903 slide. Worked fine. I switched it back after 100 rounds, but it worked fine. A buddy wanted a "S&W CCO" and mated a 4516 frame and 4566 slide. Really great balance on that gun!

3913/14, 6906/04, 5904/06, are all interchangeable PROVIDED the top end (slide/barrel) and frame are BOTH OF THE SAME REVISION in their respective series.
For example, my original 3914 slide (revision zero) will go on my revision zero 5906, and revision zero 6906.
My revision 4 (R4) 6906 slide will not go on my revision zero 5906.
I am not advising/advocating anyone to mix match pistol slides/frames. If in doubt, as to whether such combinations works or will function safely, seek out a gunsmiths opinion. YMMV, void where prohibited, check with your physician, if slide stays on longer than 4 hours.....ect ect.
That said, I made myself a very nice 5906 SSV two tone, for cheap. Regards 18DAI.
