Hi guys I am an active member on the Beretta Forum and Love my Beretta's but I was looking into a few .22's I can't justify spending 700+ dollars on a .22. To be honest the Cheetah series didn't really amazing me when I held them. I suppose I haven't really been amazed by any .22 which is why I don't mind going on the cheap end of the scale.

I rent a Ruger Mark 3 hunter which is a basically your nice heavy target pistol. I liked it a lot but the sight was terrible it was a red hi-viz sight. That can be changed but the gun is 480 dollars, I can afford a expensive 41a if I wanted but I'm not passionate about a plinking gun. If I paid taxes and changed out the sight it would probably run me around 575 ball park. Which brings me to this.

The 22a my friend let me shoot was half the price and I shoot better. He has TONS of guns, I'm talking hundreds of guns for 300 dollars to 2k dollars. He said

"Mike you show me a pistol that is 1k dollars and it shoots great and I'm happy because it should... but bring me a gun for 1/3 the price that shoots just as good and that impresses me".

I shot better with the 22a.

Now I have a few issues because I am allowed 1 gun per year to control myself.

I would like to get the stainless version. He had the 7 inch barrel version (non stainless) that was fine too. The Stainless steel version only come is a 5.5 barrel I believe and for shooting at 75 feet or less it will be fine. I really like the looks of the stainless version.

I noticed the grips are ****** and I'd like to replace them with the wood grips. I like wood grips and metal frames, thats just what I like.

Are they interchangeable from plastic to wood if I order them online?
Do you guys know of any other sites that my have nice wood grips that aren't ashy looking? I don't mind the ashy ones I just would like to know if I have options.

I would like to know if this Bushnell Trophy Red Dot will hook right up to the rail???
Bushnell 1x28 Trophy Red Dot Sight 730131 FREE S&H 730131. Bushnell Trophy Red Dot Sights, Bushnell Red Dot Sights.

If I customize this gun the way I want it, it will still be cheaper than the Ruger, and it will be "MY" own personal gun.

Any other red dots that are good quality that you guys know of I will consider too. I will not attach my Eotech 512 to this because that would be over kill and I don't want to switch back and forth.
Btw my dad has the S&W 696 I believe its the official "DIRTY HARRY" gun. That thing is stupid accurate. I had less that 1 inch groupings at 21 feet, and boy does it kick like a mule. I love that gun. Hands down the most accurate hand gun I've shot to date.

That is a real mans gun!

The 22a is a great little pistol, I bought one back in August and have shot the snot out of it, still humming along perfectly.

Anyway I am still using original sights on mine so I have no idea if the red dot you specified will fit however I do know that the wood grips are a direct replacement for the plastic/rubber/whatever they are made of grips.

I really like my 22A. I've put just a couple of hundred rounds through it and have had not one problem. It is very accurate. I like shooting it more than I do my Ruger. But it is not built like a Ruger, that's for sure. It's not an heirloom, but it sure is fun. I have a SightMark Red Dot on it now. The pistol is more accurate than I am.

I have the basic all black model; it was under $200.

Hi Mike welcome to the forum.

After market grips for the 22a are slim pickings, atleast I haven't found any yet. I have the factory wood grips on the black 5.5 bull bbl and love them. I dont' have huge hands but a little larger than normal and those grips seem to be fine for me. The only problem with the wood grips is it makes it harder to insert the magazine. It would be impossible to do any kind of speedy type reloading with the factory wood grips.

I have a cheapo red dot mounted on mine, I'm not sure of the make or model but when I get home I'll edit my post. I think you were on the right idea about the red dot, don't over-buy on it! I took my 22a into a pawn shop and paid $25 for the first red-dot that fit on the top rail. It does great. As far as the price of the 22a, you can't beat it.

You might also not know they had a recall recently on the 22a, so you might want to see if the one you are looking at is either post recall, been fixed, or be prepared to be without it for a couple of weeks. Here is a link for the recall. 22A Recall - Smith & Wesson

Thumbs up

Mike another thumbs up for the 22A. I have had mine for ten years, probably 20k+ rounds through it. It will eat anything you feed it including the cheapo bulk stuff from Wally world. Recommend the 7" barrel since you will be plinking. I added a Barska red dot scope for about $30. Upgraded to the target grips from S&W, around $80 as I recall. Bought mine with the 4" barrel and then ordered the 7". Once I got the 7 I never used the 4 again and sold it to a forum member in nearly new condition. I clean it every time it is fired and the bore still looks like a freakin mirror with rifling. It is a little dinged up after ten years but still is my favorite gun to shoot for fun. Here is a picture:

I heard about the recall and when I purchase mine if that is my final decision I am going to look for the little ding at the end of the slide where the factory approved it. It's like a circle/punch/ding whatever you would like to call it.

I would like to buy the 7 inch but the stainless model does not come that large, so I have to settle for a 5.5 inch. With the red dot on it I'm sure I will shoot just fine with it. I tore up the bullseye at the range very nicely with the 7 inch version. 1.5 inches is a difference but with an optic I'm sure it will still be loads of fun and it will look nice.

So I am going to go shooting in the next couple weeks, I am going to try his 22a again if I like it I am going to start piecing it together like order the wood grips, and dot sight. Then all I have to do is order my SS version and viola I have a FOCUS MIKE version of it

Sucks I can't post on this site at work. I signed up for another very small s&w site and I can post at work there but nobody contributes to that site barely.

The only reason I am really moving into the .22's is because they are guilt free shooting with ammo prices the way they are. They are also lots of fun or at least I think.

I will get an extra magazine with this right?

I have a Millett 3MOA dot sight on my 5.5" 22A. The dot sight is a big help to eyes that are not as young as they once were.

For inexpensive shooting, use whatever you can find (I know how that goes these days). If you want to see just how good you are getting, try a variety of .22 LR, to include some match stuff. My 22A loved Aguila Golden Eagle Match Rifle, of all things. Other than it smelling like burned wires, it shot great.

Does anyone else out there make wood grips, or am I limited to only those?

Will the Bushnell Trophy Red Dot mount right up to the 22a? What "Mounts" or "clamps" do I need to look for when hunting for a 22a optic?

I like the fact it comes with two magazines. That is a nice plus to the gun

I am pretty much ready to purchase the gun I just have to wait till the 1st of they year so I don't buy 2 guns in one year. I can buy 2 but like I said previously I would like this to be a fun habit not a gun buying addiction like it could very easily be.

Bump

What "Mounts" or "clamps" do I need to look for when hunting for a 22a optic?

Do all red dots mount to this rail?

Weaver style rings are included with Millett dot sights. Any Weaver style rings will work with the 22A.

Hi, I'm new to this forum also. I currently have several rugers and am in the middle of my 10 day CA waiting period to get my first SW 22A. I will be putting a BSA 2x-7x scope on this to shoot sillouetttes out to 50 yards. I have a Tasco Red Dot on my Ruger 22/45 and that is good for me to about 25 yards. I figure these old eyes needed the scope to stretch out to 50 yards.
