DAO 45's
New to S&W auto's . Looking for model numbers for the 45. I guess the 3rd gen. guns. Could you tell me about decocker or will they even have one. I would like to CCW but would like info on all 45's.

AFAIK, the 3rd Gen .45's are four digit model numbers starting with "45", like "4519". There are exceptions, such as the CS45 (Chief's Special 3"). Have you tried S&W's website? You can search by caliber or model #.

I just sold a 4546 this past week. That is the full size gun with DAO. The other that I am sure of is the 4586. There may be another two guns in the 45ACP platform that are DAO. Someone will chime in with the other models.

The 4546 is the full size DAO, the 4586 is the "commander length". The DAO guns have no decocker, as the hammer falls to a sort of "half cock" after each shot.
The 4576 is a traditional double action (DA first shot), and has a decocker.
There are lots of 3rd gen 45 variations out there. I'm sure Smithnut will chime in when he sees the thread, and enlighten us all.

The 4556 is the DAO version of the 4516, both of these have a shorter grip frame, AND slide.
I do recall seeing someone on this board that has a 4586 slide on a 4556 frame, so it can be done, but it would take 2 guns to get there.

Other than the CS series.....
These are all I know of:
And this very scarce version made for the Chicago Police - the M457D - part of the Value Series.
