Default Pistol Barrel Rifling Twist

I was cleaning several pistols last night and noticed that all of them have a left hand rifling twist with one exception, a model 745, that had a right hand twist.

I checked S&W's parts catalog and they show the exact same part number for both the 645 and 745 so I'm curious as to why my 745 has a right hand twist rather than a left hand twist.

Would anyone that owns a 745 please check their barrel for the twist direction?

Thanks.

My 745 has a righthand twist as does my 945. My Colt Commander is a lefthand twist and so are the ones from Kimber. I have an RIA barrel with a right hand twist.
Manufactures are free to make them anyway they so choose. As long as they work I wouldn't worry too much about it.

No, I wasn't worried about it and it doesn't make any difference whether the rifling has a left hand or right hand twist, simply thought it was interesting that all the S&W pistols (5 different models, 2 different calibers) on my bench at the time with the exception of the 745 were left hand twist.

I thought maybe it was something along the lines of S&W revolver cylinders turning counter-clockwise (viewed from the rear of the revolver) and Colt revolvers turning clockwise which is due to the different designs of the revolvers.

I don't know how S&W rifles their barrels but, for production purposes, one was think the machinery would be consistent (think ISO-9001 and Six Sigma). Then again, maybe not...

Blank in backawards would not matter. The twist would still be the same.

Check it out.

Right-or-lefthand twist is determined by whether a gun is intended for sale in the Northern or Southern hemisphere -- Coriolis Effest, don't you know. ;-)
