gun show this weekend, looking for a 22 cal.
Hello everyone I hope the holiday was good. There is a gun show this weekend in Orlando and I'm going to go to pick up some 40 cal. ammo. But I've been thinking about maybe picking up a semi-auto 22 cal. for cheap range shooting. This will not be for carry just friendly range firing. So what do I specifically look for in a 22 ? I know S&W makes some fine 22's but to be honest I'm not that impressed how they look for some reason. I currently own/shoot a S&W 4006 and love it. Any feedback you guys can provide on 22's will be appreciated. Thanks

Try looking at the SIG Mosquito cool little pistol ( also possible to mount a suppresor on one of the models) and not very much money..
Good Luck

This model is popular. I enjoy shooting it, and we all know the ammo is currently available in bulk and inexpensive.

Good luck on your quest.
For the money, a Ruger is hard to beat. You should be able to find a nice used MK II for around $300 (I’d want adjustable sights and a heavy barrel). S&W revolvers are always a favorite, but a K-22 or a Kit Gun will cost you $400-$600.
You may not find the right gun this weekend. Remember, patience is a virtue!

I'm in no rush and don't have to buy one this weekend. And I don't have to have new, I have no problem buying used and saving money. I bought my 4006 for $300.00. Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have a ruger 22/45 mkII, 6 7/8 slab side target model. Great shooter, seem to be hard to find now. Any of the mkII's will be good.

There is always the 2206 Target model with 6" barrel, or the extremely expensive 41.

If you want to stay with S&W there is the 422/622/2206 series of semi auto's that are fine for "informal" target work and don't cost a fortune. The 41 is SWEET if you want to drop that kind of $. Still the king of the hill in inexpensive .22 target quality semi auto's are the Ruger MK II/MKIII and 22/45 series pistols. You see ALLOT of these on the bullseye and gallery target leagues around here. Lot's of used ones around, lots of cheap accessories too.
A close second in popularity and quality would be the Browning Buckmark series but accessories and mags are less friendly. Both these guns are discussed daily over at rimfirecentral.

Ruger .22/45 gets my vote, here's some pics of an empty .45 case, shot this morning from seven yards, two handed hold, no rest:
Ruger in an El Paso Saddlery "1927" holster with thumb break retention:
I bought mine brand new in 2006, paid $225. Today I think you can find them today as cheaply as $251, that's with a spare magazine and scope mount, if one were inclined to put some optics on one.

This one started at $225 and has more in aftermarket up grades including the Millet. My S&W 22A shoots better groups and it has same Millet Red Dot as the Ruger. Ruger has 3/4lb trigger pull by the way, and 22A is bone stock.
Got this S&W 2206 for woods carry & general plinking, hope it shoot as good as the 22A does. Man I have bought my last gun, I been putting too much into them after buying or in the tradie as of the couple years. I have custom leather holster on the way for 2206 already, it has to stop...
Well I do have a S&W M-41 7" on order from S&W on their military program, but that will be the last one.

Another Buckmark vote
I have this Browning Buckmark Bullseye 7¼" and it is a great shooter. I am not knocking Ruger as I own 3 Mark IIs but the out of the box trigger on the Buckmark beats the Rugers hands down.
Buckmark 10 shots each target @ 10 yards.

Some great looking 22's you guys have. I really like that S&W # 2206 that's a nice match for my 4006. I may have to keep my eye out for one of those. Thanks guys.

I have a 4.5" 2206 that is a great shooter, 1000's of rounds since the early 90's. With the 3 dot sights, barrel length, and weight (35 oz) it makes a great companion shooter for the larger caliber S&W's. You can find them on the auction sites occasionally, and while they usually go for more than the 22As or the Rugers, IMO they are well worth it.

The 2206 is over built and of excellent quality in materials and workmanship in the vane of the best automatic pistols ever made, the 45xx & 10xx series such as the 4506 & 1006 pistols.

I'd have to agree 100% ( owning and enjoying several of both.) . Worth noting though is that you can get a drop in sear for the ruger for $25 that VASTLY improves it's performance.

In my experience, the Ruger and the Browning are the most accurate in this price range although, the S&W and the Beretta come close. Both also have aftermarket barrels, grips and other items readily available.
The Browning points naturaly for me. The Ruger does not. As stated above, the trigger is also better but, could still use a little work to make it really fine. I also shoot better with the Browning.
Buy what shoots better in your hand.
Best problem to have (deciding on a new firearm).

422/622
I bought a very clean, used 422 4" a few years ago at a local shop for $160. I mainly bought it because it was so cheap and I got a free one year range membership with it. It has become my favorite .22 auto. It has a very good set of adjustable sights and is light and plenty accurate enough for my needs. It is easier to strip for cleaning that my old Ruger. When I see them for sale, they are usually not very expensive. They never seemed to have gotten the respect given to of some of the other .22 autos. I don't know why.

Apologize for jumping the thread, but looking for a speed loader that works with the S&W M41. Old Navy, when you get your 41 would you post if the speed loader in the picture with your 2206 works with the 41, along with the manufacturer and retailer.

Look at Beretta model 87
I had one and sold it like an idiot. It is just like the model 84 and 85 in .380. It has ambi safety and three dot sights. Great little plinker. Not a target model though.

Hahahaha!!! I just grabbed it for a prop and then later putting it away I thought it might try it, but the magazine is way too thick. I ordered one from MidwayUSA stock # 625361 for $3.99 it's an HKS Magazine Speedloader.
Here is a holster a friend made for his 622 and has made me one for my 6" 2206, I was thinking I told him no basket weave but got to thinking about it and am not sure I did so it will be a surprise when it arrives tomorrow.

HKS Speed Loader
Thanks for the info on the speedloader at Midway. Nice looking holster. Your friend makes quality looking holsters - business or just a hobby? If business I'd be interested in contact information. Thanks again for the feedback.

I put a Ciener 22 conversion on my 1911... the more expensive version with the better sights. Plenty accurate for me & great fun. The slide is alloy so the gun is lighter than 45acp.

Good luck in your serach as I have 4 semi auto and all work great. I have a Ruger Mark II target with bull barrel, two Model 41's and a 22LR conversion kit for my Sig P226. These are kick to shoot and target shooting is fun for 16 bucks a brick of ammo.

One local store had Federal and another brand on special for Christmas week for $19.95 a brick and they sold it all in a couple days. Federal, Armscore, and other are $26 to $29 for bulk ammo with Remington bulk at the $29 end of the scale. I haven't seen Winchester bulk here in over a year.

Wow! Actually the last brick I bought this summer was slightly under $16.00 at Walmart. I went to get the Federal brand, but they were out, so I purchased the Winchester. I haven't shot them yet. The local gun shop carries the Winchester 22 bricks for a couple bucks more.

Well I am back from the gun show. It is mind boggling every time I go to this show because there is so much to see. I stopped by the Georgia Arms booth and picked up some 40 cal. for the 4006. Then I started my search for the 22. I spent several hours seemingly going in circles and narrowed it down to three guns. After looking, asking, holding etc. I decided on a brand new Ruger 22/45 with 5.5 inch bull barrel with blued finish. Came with two mags, case and a few small items for $279.00. Not the absolute bargain I was looking for but that gun feels so good in my hands I wasn't going to dilly dally for a few bucks. I actually pick it up next Thursday. Overall it was a good " man " day and I can't wait to shoot this gun ! Thanks everyone that provided feedback to my questions I really appreciate it.

Very nice. I looked at a used 22A that they were asking 219.00 but the barrel had some fairly deep nicks on it. I probably could have talked them down on price but the nicks/dents turned me off.

I think $280 for a new Mark III 22/45 is a good deal.
I own a Mark II 22/45 4" bull barrel (P4) and a Mark III 5.5" bull barrel. Love them both. Lots of aftermarket parts. If you need help, join rimfirecentral.com. I'm there as Racer X as well.

Ah, the joys of rfc! I'm beallj on that site. I bought my Walther P22 because of the support offered in the Walther section on that site. Ran 150 rounds today with one dud and a fail to feed when my thumb got in the slide. They're all about Rugers there, aren't they?

It's all about the numbers. They made MILLIONS of them, and that's just one model. Been making the Mark pistols, and the 10/22 for DECADES (and decades)

Congrats on picking a very capable and versatile gun. Actually, I don't think that's a bad price at all. You'll find Rugers ( MK i/ii/iii) hold there value well so I doubt you would have saved allot on a used one anyway.
Nice thing about the MK III's is that they are already drilled and tapped for optics.
