Dear members, About 8 years ago I owned a S&W auto in 45ACP. It had a 4" barrel, full size grip, and a slide mounted hammer drop that was spring loaded so that when it was engaged it would snap back by itself instead of having to push it up manually. I repeat, it was slide monted not frame mounted like a 1076 or 4576. Does anyone know the model number of this gun? Ifoolishly traded for something slse. Thank you

I want to say its a 4566 but I think only the LEO spec are set up that way. Or the department ordered it that way.

My guess would be 4566 or 4566TSW with decocker only feature, guessing it had a spurless or bobbed hammer as well.

It Was A SW99 a joint venture between Walther and S&W

The 99 had a button in the top the slide that you pushed down to decock the striker. The 4566/63 had the levers and could be had either way, so you need to know if it is a decock/safety or decock only version. The newer TSW models can be easly changed over but earlier guns were not machined for the decock only feature.

4566, set up as a LE version. I carried one for years before I retired and still own two, black melonite, night sights and with the decock feature you mention from the factory. Think you can order them new from Buds Guns in Kentucky. Absolutely, the favorite gun I ever had the pleasure to carry. Heavy but 100% dependable and accurate as all get out. I sent one back to the PC years ago and they installed a Briley match barrel and titanium spherical bushing ala CQB/Recons.

I read about the PC upgrades you had done to one of your 4566's, do you have any pics you can post of the briley barrel and bushing. Probably S&W doesn't do this anymore, but am curious to see what it looks like.

I agree with everyone on the 4566 or 4566TSW. I have a rather interesting one, it is a LE made for the Kentucky State Police with monogram etching and unit number. The interesting part is that KSP never adopted the 4566 as a service pistol.

I've had several 4566's, both issued and personally owned weapons.

One particularly nice version had a spurless hammer, NS, and was rail free. Easy to conceal and a real tack driver. It was available both with decock only, and decock/safety.

My current favorite 4566 is a melonite variant. It is decock only with night sights. great 45's. Regards 18DAI.
