Default S&W Model 59

Anyone out there a Model 59 expert? Is the m59 all steel or steel with alloy frame? If anyone has one can they please tell me how well they like/dislike it ?

Looking at one to purchase and know nothing about auto's--would really like a Browning HP but they're kind of pricy for me--I mainly want one to plink and tear up paper with. Any other recommendations would be helpful also. Trying to stay under $300.00.

Read another post about police trade-ins ( at Chestnut Ridge) are these a safe way to go ?

Thanks

The 59 has the alloy frame.

I like the 59s, the first hi-cap American double action pistol, and they're great for the range. For carry I like the added firing pin safety the 2nd gen 459 and 3rd gen 5904 have.

I am far from being an expert, but hope this helps. The Model 59 has an alloy frame. There are all steel versions, Model 559'S and 147A'S (rare) and all stainless Model 659'S. The all steel models weigh too much for my taste. I own an early blue Model 59 serial# range A17XXXX and I enjoy shooting it very much. I have two 20 round factory magazines to go along with the original magazines. Which limits reloading.
Being a retired cop, most police trade-ins were carried more than shot (we shot twice a year). Most guys including myself left (my) our service weapon(s) in our lockers when off duty. The guns should have been well taken care of, and fixed properly by the department armorer should repair be needed, so I would not hesitate to buy a police trade-in. The wear will be mostly cosmetic, which will not effect the shooting performance, and since you are buying the gun gun for shooting I say go for it.

Anything in the 59 series of guns is great. They have the magazine capacity to rival even the most modern guns (usually 2 or 3 rounds less), they are accurate, fit in my hand nicely and are reliable. If you can find a good 59/459/5904 etc in your price range, go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Have a couple of them, great pistols...These were made at a time when S&W quality was very high. The only neg, is they could use better sights,,, fron sight can be fixed with a little bit of white paint.

If you can find a 5906/5903 you will have the best of all worlds in S&W. It is a 3rd generation gun, totally reliable, very accurate, has good sights, sometimes even found with nite sights. They are stainless steel, have great ergonomics and are a hoot to shoot! Sometimes they can be found for $300 but not often. Get one soon and see what I am talking about!

Thumbs up

Having carried a Model 59 on/off duty for a number of years my advice is to buy one and enjoy it. With regular maintenance and quality ammo it will serve you well.
Like the Model 39 it's single action trigger requires a little practice to master but when you do you will find it crisp and accurate. What I mean is that when you fire it keep the trigger pressed down then release the trigger slowly until you feel the sear engage (it is a click that you more feel than hear) then you are ready to fire again. You do not have to release the trigger all the way to until it stops traveling then pull it back. It takes practice to develop a feel for this but when you do your accuracy will improve. When I was shown how to do this my groups shrank considerably and my confidence in the 59 really went up.

PS don't put pachmyers on it because it will increase the width and it feels like holding a 2x4 covered in rubber.

I bought a 59 as an off duty gun almost immediately after being hired in 1974. Went to the Academy, had break in , etc.... six months until it FINALLY arrived. We were still carrying 4" M-19's on duty, and other than the occasional PPK few carried anything other than a 5 or 6 shot snubbie as an OD gun.

The first Range day when we qualified with our OD guns...I didn't have to reload until rd #16 so basically beat everyone by ten sec's or so on the 30 rd course!! They were reloading and I was shooting and advancing through the stages. My fellow Officers were amazed. Modern hi-cap autos had arrived.

Carried mine off duty for two years or so.... until I was cleared to carry an Austin Behlert modified .45 Colt Commander in 1976. Sold that 59 to another cop who carried it for years.

Some of the 1st Gen autos were a bit slow to wear in and smooth out. Mine did have several FTFeeds until it finally felt reliable. I probably put 2K of ammo through it while I had it....despite 9mm ammo at the time being far more expensive than .357 mag! Luckily I found a cheap supply of 9mm brass so I started loading for mine. Using Super Vel 90 gr bullets ...anyone remember those??

The first M-59's were quite revolutionary. Soon many Agencies saw the advantage to the hi cap autos; quick reloads, 30 rds of ammo on a duty belt, etc and started testing and issuing them.

Some Agencies carried them with std ball ammo! The early hollow points WERE certainly a HP bullet, but many didn't OPEN! The poor performance of those loads gave the nine a bad rap. That was the stone age compared to the tremendous bullet technology we are blessed with today.

Carried a 5903 for ten? maybe eleven years towards the end of my Highway Patrol career. They were hated by many of the young Troopers as they all wanted Glocks or whatever the new wunderauto of the day was. BUT....those guns performed 100% for us, with very few problems. Many complained about the 147 gr sub sonics....but in actual shootings the 147 gr load did quite well. Still have my old 5903 from the nineties. Wish I still had it's M-59 Grand Dad too!

I have two, a blue Model 59 that is stone stock, and a nickel plated Model 59 with an aftermarket adjustable rear sight. They're both good guns.

When I was rangemaster for our department, about half the Deputies carried Model 59's and half carried revolvers. We had roughly 300 Model 59's in the field at that time. About 1978 or '79, S&W came out with some upgrades to the guns, which entailed replacing the extractor & spring, guiderod, barrel bushing and magazine followers. Any Model 59 that has the upgraded parts will have a punch mark on the front of the extractor, towards the muzzle. The improved magazine followers have four legs on them, which the early followers didn't have.

As mentioned, ammunition was problematic back then. The early guns wouldn't even feed S&W 9x19 ammunition, but it was actually made by Fiocchi anyway. We used Winchester 100 grain Soft Point in the early years, and when Winchester introduced their excellent Silver Tip 9x19 ammunition, we immediately adopted it. The Silver Tip bullets expanded as advertized in all our shootings....

Hope this helps.

Fred

From what I've seen out there, staying under three hundo for a good M-59 might be bordering on Mission Impossible.

These are EXCELLENT guns and display all the quality and manufacturing S & W was capable of during their heyday. Problem is, a lot of collectors have realized that, too, and are driving up prices and driving down availability.

Good luck to you in finding one!

For serious carry I'd go with a 5906 or 5903, if you just want the 59 then I buy it if it is a good deal.

I am not an expert, nor do I play one on TV. However, I did buy a Model 59 a few years back at the local Gander Mountain for right about $300, out the door including tax.

I like it. I have somewhat larger hands, and I am comfortable with the fat, double-stack grip which is just fine with me. It works well and is fun for plinking and poke-a-hole-in-paper fun. It is every bit as accurate as I can shoot it. I would not hesitate to put it into concealed carry duty.

It is only 'drop-safe' when the safety/decock lever in the 'safe' position, should that be of any concern to you. I understand that the only way it may fire if dropped requires it to hit from just the right height and at just the right angle, so it is not a great risk and not a deal breaker for me.

I choose to leave it decocked with the safety/decock lever up or 'off-safe' which leaves the heavier DA 1st round pull and trigger finger management as the operating safeties. This is consistent with the drill for my other guns; you may choose to leave the lever up or down as you like.

In plinker duty it has had a diet of mostly ball ammo, which it eats without problem. I have not fed it anything more exotic, but would before putting it into carry duty.

From my perspective, if you can find one for $300 or less, and it is not obviously beaten within an inch of its life, go for it!

Default Really?

Wow. I recently bought a New In Box model 59 Nickel from an 80yr old guy selling off his collection. Its a 1979 and he bought it for his wife. She didn't like it...Too flashy. hehe. Anyway, I paid $300 for it. Has box, papers, cleaning kit, mag, etc. I was debating on shooting it, as I have a few NIB S&W in my collection. But after reading that they weren't worth anything I decided to shoot it today. I'll tell ya. The thing runs like a Rolex. What a beautiful shooting gun. The trigger after the DA is awesome. The only problem I have, is it shoots real low. No way to raise/lower the rear sight? This is my only issue.

Try a different Grain of 9mm. 124 or 147. Maybe a different ammo mfg. also.

I guess I'm lucky. I found one a few weeks ago that is as close to "NEW" as they get. It came with the box, brown paper wrap, 2 mags and all the paper work. I would say it's 98%. I give $350 for it. It is a great addition to my rather small collection. Grab it if you can.

I have owned a M59 1st generation since ~ 1980 and love it.
Fired thousands of rounds through it and is very reliable, polished the feed ramp when I bought it (used) and a couple years ago replaced the guide rod spring.
Last year I let a friend play with it on the range & he dropped it, since then the 'lollipop' rear sight is sloppy & would like to replace it. If any of you can lead me to one I sure would appreciate that.

Enjoy those M59's!

UPDATE>
Found a replacement rear site at Jack First (605)343-9544 in South Dakota - referred by tech dept at Brownell's.
Becky there at Jack First said it would go out in the mail today (4-26-12)
Keep your powder dry.

Mid-70's bought a 59 from a friend's BIL who was some kind of Treasury agent at that time. Still have and is an OK pistol..returned to S & W twice -once for for factory recall..magazine related, returned with an " A" prefix stamped on serial number and magazines. Second time was the slide stop came completely OUT of the pistol while I was firing..turned out was a detent ball or spring failure.

Haven't shot in 20 years or so..will haul it out, clean, re-lube and tear up some paper.

Also have a 6906, Glock 26 and WWII P38..6906 and 26 good to carry..the others OK to punch paper.

Oh yeah, did manage to scratch the 59's frame when tossed a spare mag in it's gun rug..permanent Sharpie or equivalent didn't help much.

Can anybody here tell me if a 559 complete slide Assembly can installed on 59 without any trouble? I have a fine working 559 that I truly like, but the frame is cracked and do not like repaired frames and I have found a decently priced model 59 parts gun with a good frame.

TIA, Gary

No, you can not.

The 2nd gen's have a firing pin safety and the 1st gen 59 does not.

A Model 59 frame only has room for the decock lever. To move the firing pin safety out of the way, you'd need a 2nd gen x59 frame that has both the decock and firing pin safety levers in it.

I bought this one last month for a little over twice the $300.00 benchmark mentioned.
It is, however, NIB with all goodies. The mags were still wrapped-up in the vapor barrier paper.
It's a "time-capsule" -- a new gun from 1978.

Thank-You, Ray.
I'm always looking (yet to find when I have the cash) for a high condition 39, but this 'un cropped-up first!

I haven't gotten to the range yet with mine. A nickel finish one recently purchased. Almost matches the 659 and 645 I have in finish even though both of those are polished stainless. Have 3 generations of the 9mm line with the 59, 659, and a satin finish 5906.

Not wanting to change the subject, but I've also been looking at the "traditional" model 59's. I really like the old S&W craftsmanship. However, I have small hands and find the grip (large capacity) rather large. Is the model 39 basicly the same (older) gun with single stack magazine? If so, I may go for a good clean model 39.

I'd say yes, basically same pistol except for capacity.

I think I have small hands - from tip of my middle finger to first crease at wrist I measure 7.5 ".
First held a 59 in early '80's and thought "Boy, this thing is fat !". Ended up with a 439, which I traded in '98.
Remembered my 439 in 8/2011 and the DA / SA with decocker / safety which I really favor (I do not like SA pistols, particularly with light triggers - that's why I sold our 2 Kimbers).
Long story short - a 439, beautiful nickel 39-2, 5906 with CT laser, 4566, and most recently a really nice 59.
My point - none of them are really "fat" - it's what you get used to - it's like recoil - mostly in the mind of the holder / shooter.
I used to have a KAHR PM4544 - that's a .45 polymer frame - Weight: Pistol 17.3 oz., Magazine 2 oz. - some say they kick like hell - I loved to shoot it one-handed - if you asked me if it kicked, I'd have to say "I guess so, that's what others say" - you see what I'm saying - it all comes down to "mostly in the mind" (except maybe for a .454 Casull ).
The 39 series with the arched backstrap have that great feel.
The 59 with flat backstrap feels just as good - much like a 1911.

I have to argue with myself over whether the 439 or the 59 (both with stock grips) feels "fatter". If I kept only one, probably the 59.
You won't go wrong with either. Good luck.

Using your method of finger tip of middle finger to wrist line, mine is just barely making 7 inches. The 39 fits and handles nice, the 59 feels like a 2x4 - fat. The best double column magazine in my hand is the Browning Hi-Power! YMMV

Good luck.
Now that's odd. Same measurement for the fingers and I have a problem with the trigger finger extending way past the trigger guard on the 59.

Yo Mike, I just happen to have seen a 39-2 for sale at a local range! Along with 2 59s!! Think I'll snag one of the 59s myself! Dale

Default holster for S&W Model 59

As much as a needle in a haystack search this may be: does anyone know where I might be able to find a leather holster for my 59? I would rather use an outside-the-waistband leather holster that my belt feeds through to carry. I have a few nylon generic holsters that accept it but would still rather have leather. From what I've seen in my searching online, I may just have to be in the right place at the right time at a gun show...but thought it wouldn't hurt asking.

Give Ed a call or drop him an email. He has a mould for the 59/459. You won't be disappointed in the quality nor the price. His pancake models run about $33. Delivery is about a week. Same price whether plain, basketweave or border print. Your choice of color altho I prefer the mahogany.

Lobo Gun Leather is a forum vendor. I have purchased two holsters from Ray. One was for a Sigma and the other was for a M65 3in. High quality and a good price. lobogunleather.com

Hoping you guys can help me out? I bought the same thing yesterday - NIB, with S&W paper wrapped up, 2 magazines, etc., never fired. I bought it as my CC sidearm )to replace my Beretta that BROKE) but I'm wondering if I should fire it and hurt its value or re-sell to a collector and buy something more, used. I've got three boxes off ammo and I'm just dying to try this thing out - so - any thoughts? Should I just go ahead and keep it, even though I'm going to actually USE it? I sip my tea out of fine china, wear cashmere around the house, and I'm certainly not gonna have a gun I can't shoot!

Did just that. Really happy with it for now. Now I just need to find a holster for it and we'll be in business.

Hi Madmax83-I have a 659 and it fits very well in an off-the-shelf De Santis leather holster that's made for the SIG P-226. The holster is marked "001 80" on the back. As a matter of fact I have 3 holsters that are off-the-shelf for my P-226 and thay all accept the Model 659 stainless version of the 59 very well. So I suppose most if not all holsters made for the SIG P-226 would fit the Model 59.

KY, you're in for a fun day at the range! No sense in having a fine firearm, especially a S&W, and not using it as intended. A couple of months ago I picked up a used 659 and it's a ton of fun to shoot. Its quickly become my favorite 9mm. Mine was the opposite of your 59, kind of beat up, scratches on the slide and the lanyard loop behind the magazine well looked like a previous owner used it to hammer nails. With a little hand polishing it buffed out real nice and, with some Dremel work on the lanyard loop she now looks very sharp-one of the benefits of stainless.

BTW-you need a holster-try the ones made for the SIG P-226, they fit the Model 59 very well.

Now all I need is a set of factory grips for my 659-it wears Pachmayr rubbers and they are thick as a brick.
