Default Mod 41 Should I bite?

Ok, I own a Pardini, 3 Rugers MK II's, 5 617/17's and a Browning Buckmark so really don't NEED another .22 target gun but..... I've always kind of wanted a Mod 41. Recently, I ran across a a mid 90's (?? S/NUAP7XXX) Mod 41 that is in near mint condition and it has my attention. The gun is in 99% condition , has had professional trigger work , comes with 3 mags, factory case, papers etc. It is wearing a (D&T) 5.5" heavy barrel but also comes with the longer (7'?) barrel that appears unfired. This particular set-up is priced @ just under $900 which
seems decent considering the duel top ends and nice trigger.

I admittedly know allot more about S&W revolvers than their Semi Auto's. I'm especially green on mod 41's. So I'm looking for advice on what to watch out for in this vintage mod 41.
Thoughts on price?
New vs this one?

All input carefully considered.

Thanks

Sounds like a really good deal, especially with the trigger work and the second upper. I'd jump on it in a second. Bill.

Why didn't you buy it? M41's are not getting cheaper. That is a great deal -- it should have followed you home.

I have a dozen L-frame 357s. So what I'm stilling looking for more. You don't own an M41 -- why not?

Since you have all those nice target .22's you probably already know that you may need to feed the 41 the bullet it likes.
When I was researching the 41 it seemed like there were reports of mostly good pistols & a few others that don't run quite as well. I made sure the one I bought ran well.
The most economical accurate ammunition is usually the CCI Standard Velocity 40grain.
High Velocity ammunition is not recommended. I have seen a shock buffer recommended if you are going to run high velocity ammo.
The RimfireCentral S&W subforum contains a wealth of knowledge on the Model 41.
There is a superb site that details maintenance on the Model 41 at Model 41 maintenance

I am no bullseye shooter, but I don't know how the trigger could get much better than what mine is (I don't know if it has been adjusted and I have only shot one Model 41.) The trigger is adjustable as detailed on the website above.

I would buy it. You should be able to sell a 99% Model 41 with 2 barrels for that much if you decide not to keep it.

A super price for a great auto. I can shoot others, but the model 41 sends them to the back of the bench. The feel, balance, sights, trigger pull, and overall looks always amaze me.

Why would the Mdl 41 require trigger work?

Ok Gents, thanks for the encouragement. For the record I didn't buy it on the spot because:
a) I was already coming home with one new gun that day and didn't want to to the extra multi-gun purchase paperwork.
b) the gun had been in the case for 2 years already so I wasn't sure if it was as good a deal as I thought. (Not allot of call for $1000 .22's in Swamp Yankee country :-). Not that you guys wouldn't be biased but I feel better about it now.
c) my signature alone holds any gun indefinitely in this particular shop. We've got a long history. They have my sig and it's tucked in the back of their safe waiting for me. I will likely go back for it in a few weeks to bring it home.

As far as ammo, I've learned my lesson about finding what each rimefire firearm likes and sticking with it. FWIW, I mainly shoot Wolf Match Target in my target guns as they all seem to like it allot. The exception being the Pardini which thrives on inexpensive but highly consistent Aguila SE subsonic.

As for a 41 "requiring trigger work" I can't this one did. However, it's one owner was the shops owner /gunsmith who does trigger work on everything he buys. He confirmed he had worked this one and I can tell you it's sweet. By comparison, my buddy bought a NIB 41 last year and the trigger was (IMHO) disappointing for a $800 target gun. So much so that I then put my purchase plans for my own 41 on hold.

A plus to RGAmos on M41 triggers.
Of course I have not handled anything like all of the M41 pistols produced but mine and the others that I have handled have very good triggers. Mine break at 2.0# &1#15oz respectively, with repeatability, the travel is extremely short, no creep at all.
I have shot European pistols with two stage triggers which might arguably be better, but very few single stage triggers will even match the usual run of M41s. This opinion is shared by many.

I second Bill's reply. Local pawn shop has one with a 7 inch barrell, no box, no extra mags. Excellent condition. $800.00.

I just bought a new one a few months ago but would have loved to find one like yours for $800. What ever goes wrong can be fixed, worse case. I really enjoy shooting mine, especially when I'm not in the mood to reload and police brass.

Default Couple of barrel related questions

Out of curiosity, anybody know what a new/relacement 7" barrel costs?
I'm guessing at least $250 but it's just a guess. Also, are the barrels just plug and play or do they require fitting by a smith?
Anyway, having both barrels was a deciding factor in my decision to jump on it. Figure i can scope/dot one and leave the other with iron sights.

I just bought a 7" barrel from Midway,
and it cost me $245 with shipping included.

It was really simple to change out, and I'm happy
to say that mine was "Plug and play"
I was a bit apprehensive to get one,
since I had read on the forum that
some folks have had fitment problems.

Takes only seconds to switch barrels.

I put some rounds through the 7" last weekend,
and I was very pleased!

Default M41 Compensator

Can the compensator from an old M41 be removed and shot as is?

Sure remove the comp and shoot it. Someone here might have a false muzzle to protect the barrel crown. I would suggest you post a request for one. They are collectable but someone may have an extra.

OK, just sold two other underused revolvers from the collection so I've got cash. Will likely pick her up this week :-)
