Default 5903

I know this is a rather stupid question but' is the 5903 considered a 2nd or 3rd Gen. pistol. Also does anyone know of a place where you can buy Exact replacement sights in just plain three dot white and not night sights that won't burn you a new one?.

5903 is considered a third generation pistol.
Midwayusa or Numrich may be worth looking at for sights.

A 5903 is a 3rd generation auto. Same thing as a 5906, but with an aluminum frame instead of a stainless frame. I'm not sure whether your handgun has standard fixed, Novak low profile fixed, or adjustable sights, but S&W still stocks replacement sights for most models. Midway USA and Brownell's usually has a good selection of S&W sights as well. Another place you could look would be Numerich Arms.

The sights on 3rd gen pistols are Novak's some are actually stamped NOVAK and some are not. You can buy the sights from Wayne at http://www.novaksights.com/. Be careful if you install 'em yourself, 'cause there are little coil springs slightly compressed under the rear sight.

Not to confuse the matter but if it's an early one, it may not use Novak's.

One thing that MAY let you know if it's an early one would be a squared instead of rounded trigger-guard.

These are early ones:

You are correct sir! Somehow I totally forgot about those pre-Novaks.

Thanks to all. They are Novaks and I will probably order a set and have them installed locally.

The 3rd gen Smith & Wesson autos, are in my humble opinion, the finest and most over looked bottom feeders out there! Their ergonomics and dead nuts reliability so often get overshadowed by all the various plastic kings and queens of today. Such a shame. 3rd gen S&W autos point good, feel good in the hand and will eat anything you feed 'em without a single malf. What more could you ask for in a combat pistol?

If I had the extra scratch, I'd pick up a 5906 or a 4006 in a heartbeat!

+1 to the previous poster. Carried a 5903 for a dozen years...shot the heck out of it...not a SINGLE issue...EVER. Yet so many 3rd Gen HATERS out there??

We had nearly 200 of them issued to the Troopers with very minimal problems.

Liked mine so much I bought it with the duty holster, mag pouch and 4 mags for $140 or maybe $160 IIRC. Still have it.

I checked with MThelo and he still has a few sets of the original Novaks from our 5903's . I'd happily send you a set if you'd like. All I'd ask is for you to send a donation of $5 or $10 to the Site. Whatever you see fit.

Couldn't agree more on the 3rd gen S&W autos. i have owned a dozen or more and put thousands of rounds thru them without a single problem EVER! It's a shame they get so bashed, but that keeps the prices down! Good luck with your 5903, a great piece.
