Ken KJS - the 3228 may have been shipped in 57 OR 58 - Jinks would be the best source and a letter may be in order. Things were NOT shipped OR finished Mfg. in SN order
S&W 41 31XX Oct-57

97157 between 67 and 69 - probably 1968, but as usual - Jinks/S&W for actual SHIP date

I have no idea of value, being in Australia prices are very different.
As Tom pointed out, guns were not completed or shipped in order. The manufacture dates are not recorded only shipping dates. There is no doubt that the serial number was stamped in 1957. Most likely made and shipped in 57 also, a letter will tell you for sure.

My own opinion is number 3001 would be worth more also 3002 and 3003, possibly 3010 maybe a little higher.
I do not have a 41 of this type so for me I would not care if its first year, second year or third. Its the first type Model 41 that's the important point for me. With around 6000 guns fitting this the value is no different from the second or third type. My opinion only.
The condition is the value decider.
Cheers

Thanks Aussie and Tom,

I am not planning on selling the 41 so it's not a big deal, more curiosity than anything.

I did talk to one of the historians at Smith and Wesson and he confirmed that this would have shipped late 1957 or early 1958.

I guess if I really want to know I will have to spring for a letter.

Ken

Recently inherited my dad's M41 and am interested in it's mfg date...the range of serial numbers is pretty wide....

I am guessing late 50's early 60's.....perhaps you eagle eyed M41 enthusiasts can refine this....SN 40085...there is no prefix on it.

Great shooter!!!

Hi, sorry to resurrect a thread. Just made an account to ask here, about when would 428XX have been made? I assume in the early 60s

Thanks!

I started an account to read up on loads for my 686. I just bought a model 41 from an old shooting buddy. Serial number is 1147xx. Any info would be helpful.
Also bought a 52-2 from the same guy, A1903xx. Is there somewhere I can get info?

Thanks!

S&W 1147XX at end of preAs - probably made in 1969 but may have been shipped later?
S&W 52-2 A1903XX - no good data but 1972-3??

As usual S&W/Jinks for actual ship date

You are correct with the starting serial number of 3001 in 1957. Then in 1970 the serials numbers changed, to begin with an A prefix, starting at A115001. Then in 1984 changing to a 3 alpha serial TAAxxxx. You serial is the latter and is from 1993.

1980 or 1981 sounds right to me.

As a very knowledgeable person always says, S&W or Jinks for the actual ship dates.

For what it is worth,You can order a recoil buffer for the 41 which will enable it to shoot the higher velocity ammo.

Default Used 41

I just purchased a used S&W 41 with a serial number 4xxx.
I was wondering what year it could of been made and what I should of paid? It came with a 5" and 7" barrel, 7" has a compensator on it with 2 weights. Also came with 4 mags.
What does a 41 like to digest?

Welcome to the forum.
Your model 41 is most likely 1958 however only a factory letter will tell.
You need to post some pictures so we can see if you have a complete and correct gun. Your model 41 would have come with the 7 3/8” barrel and muzzle brake.
The barrel weights you mention, are these the under barrel steel & alloy or 2 parts to the Olympic barrel weight?
Chances are you don’t have the correct mags, if you do it’s a bonus.

added: The 5” will be a later edition to the package. Again a picture will tell you what type and date of the 5”. A price will be depending on the condition and knowing exactly what you have.

Your model M41 will just love the CCI SV ammo. Thats the recomended ammo for this gun no matter which barrel you use on it. I would have paid no more then around $1500. for this entire package myself but thats just me. Others may have paid more or a lot less.

Default New to Model 41 Forum

I purchased a used Model 41 approx. 3 years ago. S/N A602115. Can anyone tell me the year of manufacture? I purchased a new spring, recoil buffer and a 5.5" barrel (through S&W). The Model 41 is so accurate it's scary.

Welcome to the Forum,
The serial# dates to about 1980 according to the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition.

To both Silent running and eglide96 both of these guns are after 1998 production but I do not have a 3rd edition book to nail it down further. Possibly one of the other guys will have the info you need.

UDT and UDD.
I would guess and say around 2010.
If you post pictures it may nail it down, a picture of the box label may do also.

Question

Good morning, quick question. I was at the Winston Salem gun show. There was a dealer there with a model 41 with box n papers. The package included a 5.5 " barrel wrapped in wax s&w paper, bianci leather holster. All paper work was In the box Including the pistol application from the sheriff who ordered it. The gun was presented as unfired. Only 1 magazine in the box. Cleaning kit and muzzle break included as well as a fancy set of grips. He was asking 2500. According to him the 5.5 barrel was ordered with the revolver but no serial number on the barrel or paperwork to back that up. Is it worth that. I would rate the 41 at 98% but I am unsure if it's worth that much. I am having trouble with the picture but I will provide it shortly.

A) I think his price is too high.
B) It's a pistol, not a revolver.

Greetings, looking at a 41 .22 SHORT serial number 74557 with 3 port muzzle brake. Does this serial number jive with the 1,000 41 shorts that were manufactured?

Several in the 76XXX range, but at least 1 in the 745XX range. Jinks/ S&W for your ship date.

Showerjr I would be willing to pay around $1500.-$1750.00 with the goods that are with it. No more then that as you can buy a new one cheaper. Even to me that is high actually.

Yes a 1st year gun will add value to the gun for sure. I also have a 1st year issue m41 and love shooting every week still. Myself I would want more then the price of a new one for mine if I ever decided to sell it. Probably leave it for my Grandson who loves to shoot with Papa. He's only 16 now but has great shooting skills and eyes for the sport as well.

Your grandson is one lucky boy! Glad you have him to pass the pistol on to.

Default Smith & Wesson model 41

I was at my local gun shop and the owner holds onto the nice firearms that people trade in or sell to him. He gave me a call on a model 41 and told me to come over and look at it. I've heard that it's one of the best 22 rimfire semiauto by most people on YouTube like hickok45 and 22plinkster. The gun is 7 3/8 barrel with a chrome like muzzlebreak and a cocking indicator he says it's a 1958 vintage and the condition is nice the bluing is great with some wear on the grips and he wants $1500 for it. It's a lot of money and just want to make a good choice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The muzzle break should be black in colour, and it sounds like a lot of money. An early gun would be nice but I would keep looking.

Default Please confirm approx YOM and value of S&W 41

I read this thread with interest and believe the S&W 41 I have was shipped sometime in late 1964 or early 1965. Its S/N is 706XX and earlier posts show shipping dates of NOV '64 for 700XX and DEC '65 for 760XX, which is ~460/mo during that 13 month period. I would think 706XX was shipped perhaps late '64 or early '65. What would the experts suggest?
Regarding value, I am liquidating a collection belonging to a deceased friend's wife and would appreciate your thoughts on a "going price". This 41 has the 5" light weight field bbl and is very lightly used. My friend shot all of the guns he acquired but this one shows no bluing wear, scars or scratches and the wood grips are in VG or better condition. I would rate the overall condition at 98%. Unfortunately, no box, tools or paperwork could be found. There was an old box of Federal Monarch standard velocity loads missing 20 rds in the shoebox with this pistol so that may have been the extent of its use. Any assist you can offer with pricing this very nice pistol would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and Happy New Year!

I'm no expert but happen to have one about the same condition and vintage, 74xxx, w/o factory box and it, like yours, has the cocking indicator. According to my latest Blue Book of Gun Values 2015 edition one in 98% condition shows $1,000. Add $100 for 5.5" bbl with extended sight. Mine is 5.5" but I'm not sure what an extended sight is? Also "add 15%-40% for early variations with cocking indicator (disc. 1978).

Thank you ridewv. Your value info from a more recent than my latest version (15yrs old) of BBoGV is very helpful.
I'm no expert on 41s either but have seen an extended sight version, which is actually that. The front sight sits about 1.5" fwd from the front of the barrel on what looks like an extension to a rib on a shotgun bbl. One can be seen on the pistol in this ad on the gb site: http://www.gunbroker.com/item/610692315 . Sounds like you have a nice early 41 too. Thanks again for value info.
