Default Model 41 - serial numbers and dates

Does anyone happen to have a listing of the manufacturer serial number and dates for the 41's for 1st year of production thru '77?

Thanks

The best reference is the Standard Catalog of S & W 3rd edition (this from Amazon):

Amazon.com: Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson) (9780896892934): Jim Supica, Richard Nahas: Books

Hello Gents

What an awesome forum

I have a 7 inch Model 41 with the serial number A40509, that would mean it was made in 77 correct?

It's strange because the stated numbers all have 6 numbers after A and mine has 5

LongrangerSA your 41 appears to be from 1962.
The “A” prefix on early guns (lower than 115000) indicates a duplicate serial number.
You have said yours is 7”, it should actually be 7 3/8” and fitted with a muzzle brake or false muzzle, is this correct?

Thanks for the reply Aussie collector!

That's very interesting, so there is one out there somewhere with the serial number 40509?

It does indeed have a short false aluminium muzzle and apologies for stating the incorrect length!

Only the M46 came in a 7" barrel length. The M41's were as Aussie stated at 73/8" long or in a 5.5" length.

The Model 41 came with 7" barrels after 1978 when the 7 3/8" barrel with muzzle brake was dropped from production.

Default Model 41 - serial numbers and dates

What would be the year of production be for 39xx, 4 digit serial number ...... 1957? When doing research online I found a Wikipedia page on the Model 41 where is states that S&W produced 679 units in 1957, (referenced to Jinks, Roy G.; Krein, Sandra C. (2006). Smith & Wesson (MA) (Images of America). Boston: Arcadia Publishing. p. 128.). So I'm a bit confused on a production date. Any help would be appreciated.

Serial 39xx would be 1958 where nearly 10,000 were made.
yours is in the first 1000 made, well numbered to be correct.

The first run of 41s was 3001 - 4999 - SO Jinks can confirm if first or second year??

Hello Tom B,
How are those 41 counterweights? Lol.
I ran across this yesterday and need to know what it could be worth?
It seems to be in excellent condition.

Weights are in bed - happy and sleeping with buddies. On your 41, possibly first year but most likely 1958 ship date - worth checking with Jinks. Looks like earlier owner went whole hog on cleaning the brake - can be replaced wit new/better one. Getting correct box etc. would be a good objective. Mag may be first or second style? As it sits, would say in the $950 -$1200 range without further inspection.

Also looks like the previous owner had some fun filling in the logo and SN with gold paint and a little red paint on the front sight.

I also have a 1958 year model 41. It shoots like a new one. You won't be sorry if you buy that one at all. Mines in the 12000 serial no range and has no prefix letter at ll.

Yesterday I purchased a Mint condition S & W mod 41 at an auction, talked to the man who sold it and he said he just bought it and put it in his safe. Checking the dates it was made in the first year of production.

I brought her home, cleaned and lubricated her then shot 30 rounds of PMC Target ammo through her, my target was 88 yards, she shot a 2 X 4" group with one jam.

I was amazed to find she was made the first year of production, the year I graduated from high school.

Ed without seeing the SN, may or may not be first year HOWEVER the 5.5" bull bbl is NOT correct to first or earlier than 1963 when this bbl. was introduced (about 40000 range). grips are of the early style and finish. Would guess your SN is 14000 or above - 1958 or later.

That's a nice looking 41 but you should know that even if the frame is a first year (1957), the 5.5" Heavy Barrel didn't come out until 1963 so it is not original to the gun.

Edit: Tom beat me by 4 minutes.

The serial No is 77921 which puts it made in 1958 I believe but I am far from a historian for S&W. The deal I read stated that "a lighter 5 inch barrel was introduced in 1958 for field use." That is in Wikipedia.

I edited this to include the whole serial No. Figure maybe the historians at S & W might read this and have some record of her. She has a 5 1/2 inch barrel.

77921 should be a mid to late 1960s gun and the barrel would be correct for the frame.

Serial #___ Date of Mfg.
104XX_______ 1958
149XX_______ 1959
189XX_______ 1959
295XX_______ 1960
1120XX______ 1969

The lightweight field barrel is 5" and has a narrower profile and different rear sight. Your barrel is a 5.5" Heavy barrel. Nice gun.

Thanks for your research, I appreciate it.

I just put another 50 rounds through her, Rem Standard Vel. She is dead on, if my eyes were better it would have been one inch at 50 yrds.

This may be the place to find an answer: Will the Mod 41 hold up to a steady diet of high velocity 22 ammo? I have been told that they were intended for Standard Velocity ammo and that is all I have ever shot in them, but as well as they are made I fail to understand the limitation.

Your best ammo to shoot thru this gun will be the CCI- SV brand. It does not require the high velocity ammo at all and could actually do damage to it. Stick to the SV and enjoy this gun for many great years with it. I own a 1958 model with the long barrel myself and love it.

I'm guessing my 74192 was made around 1965 then.

Tom;
I bought 795XX from H.H.Harris (S&W Distributors) March, 25-1967. Guns moved out of there quite fast so I wouldn’t imagine it was there long.

Default Date on early Model 41?

Hi all,

I am trying to get a bit of information on the date of a Model 41 I have owned since the 1980s. I had always assumed it was from the 1960s but decided to do a little research and am thinking it is probably a 57.

The serial number is 3228 which is stamped above the model number on the side of the frame. If they started the numbering at 3001 and they shared these numbers with other Smith & Wesson handguns would this be an early 1957 gun?

Any rough estimate of value would be appreciated. I have the original box but no paperwork. The gun is in very good to excellent condition. Some slight wear to the bluing at the end of the muzzle brake otherwise near perfect.

Thanks,

Ken

G’day Mate,
Welcome to the forum.
Great looking Model 41, 3228 would be a first year gun. Don’t need the serial number to see it’s the first type.
Hate to say it but, you will find that the box is not original to that gun. Check for a serial number under the bottom section, written in white pen. That box is for a 7XXXX or higher.

Besides serial #, an important feature in identifying early 41s is the absence of the "crescent moon"shaped scallops on either side of the frame just in back of the trigger. Curiously, this is also one of the features that distinguishes a 1911 from a 1911a1!
Does anybody know at what serial # S&W changed the frame design to include the scallops?

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks Aussie,

I was suspecting the box wasn't original from other sites I looked at last night. Not sure when it got replaced, probably sometime in the 1970s.

Any idea of value for the gun? Does the first year increase the value much?

Thanks,

Ken
