Optics Options for model 41
Lord willing and the creek does not rise, should have my new model 41 this week Was wondering what optics would work on 7 inch barell on new model 41?
I have read that the 5 inch barells come ready for optics, but not the 7 inch.

I am looking at a Docter red dot installed in the rear sight dovetail(?). My goal is fast acquisition for Steel Challenge rimfire. Any thoughts on that?

If I remeber correctly all the new barells are drilled and tapped to accept a scope base. I have seen the normal Weaver style base installed and an Ultra Dot or similar tube style red dot attched. If you intend on using a Docter or C-More STS, they can be aobtained with Weaver style mounts. You should also check out BME as they have a wide assortment of mounts for target semi auto's.

TSQUARED is correct. I just bought a new 7" barrel and it is indeed D & T. I put a Weaver mount on it and a TruGlo Holo. Works great for my needs.

It seems like S&W is getting it right that is great news. Hopefully mine will come D&T also. Thanks for the response. Never used anything but iron sights on my revolvers and lately have been changing over to gold dot at that cause they don't show up like they use too .
I might even look int a 2x sight, any suggestions?

Model 41 and a Docter Optic is a great combination.
My barrel was already drilled and tapped, so I just used an inexpensive Weaver rail. IIRC... #63 of around $8.

I have a newer 41 with the 7" barrel. It is tapped and I've mounted a Weaver rail on it. On the weaver I have an Osprey red dot. It looks just like the NC Star. The whole set up is OK and it works fine. But, it is somewhat ugly. So I decided to add a Burris FF II at the rear dovetail. I plan to remove the Weaver rail. I wrote to BME and spoke to him and he is making a mount to fit the dovetail. I sent him detailed pictures, drawings, the actual rear sight and I've spoken and emailed several times. The mount is in anodizing and should be ready in a week or so. The sight mounts directly to the mount in the dove tail. Check the last picture of the CZ to see how it will mount.
I did the same thing to a Glock 34 and a CZ 75 TS. The Glock mounts can be found anywhere. The CZ.....not so much. I spoke to CZ Custom a few months back and they were working on a mount for the 75 TS. A month ago I checked their site and they had one. I bought it and I mounted a C-More 7MOA. It shoots great.
I'll let you know when I get the mount how it works out on the 41.
Here's the current set up.
And here's the CZ.
It is a bit more elegant than that rail and sight that I currently have on the 41.

BME mount is an option
BME made the mount for the Docter optic that fits right into the slot for the rear sight. This is useful if your barrel is not D&T. I sent him the barrel, and he did the rest.

I have a Clark Barrel which is milled the entire length so that the Docter will go anywhere along the barrel.
I also thought that sight acquisition (s.a.) would be faster with the sight at the rear. Not so for me at least. The fastest s.a. for me is with the Docter mounted toward the midpoint of the barrel.
That is a very common location; my Bully LoMount Barrel has a Docter base machined into it in the center barrel location.

S&W Model 41s & Weaver #62 Mount
I've just tried a Weaver #62 on my early 70s vintage Model 41.
None of #62 holes match up -- the centers on my slide are 3.75". It appears to be of S&W manufacture.
Further, the barrel does not have a rounded profile on top; it is rectangular, perhaps a quarter inch wide.
Recommendations?
See attached photos: - D&T barrel on left or front;
- regular barrel on right or rear.

You have an EFS Model 41. Extendable Front Sight. You can loosen those screws and extend the front sight further out. The barrel can't be drilled and tapped because the screws would go into the sliding front sight. Nor should you damage that barrel, it's rare and in demand.
The best bet would be to try another barrel or mount a red dot in place of the rear sight.
Dig'n em up from the past?

The nice thing about a 41 is that with one pistol, you can have several different barrels, each for a purpose and they all will fit and shoot great.
I like a 7" for open sights and a 5 1/2" for my Ultra Dot.

Hello, im new to this forum, and the s&w family. I purchased my first s&w and its a 41, so I may compete in bullseye. The current owner does not have a scope or red dot, only steel sites. I dont think id do to well with those. I really like how your red dot is mounted.. how can I do that on mine?? Thanks..

I guess that I am in the low percentile of shooters that do NOT own or use any optics on handguns. I've tried them on fellow members M41's and Hi Standards, but never cared much for them or never shot well with them. When I use to compete with my M41 I was one of the only two fellas that shot the matches with Factory metallic sights.
They just seem way to jittery for me and I do have a steady hand and grip.
Oh well..........

Bob,
you replied to a four year old thread, so the Op may not see it.
However, if your eyesight is up to it, I find as Chief 38 says, you get less "wobble" when you use iron sights.
The red dot seems easier to see, but it accentuates the "wobble factor" dramatically; that said, I use an Ultra Dot on a Weaver base on the 5" barrel for Bulls Eye, I also have the 7" barrel w/ irons that I shoot well for the first ten rounds, but my eyes are so bad, I can't focus for the whole match, hence I use the red dot.
Both barrels came drilled and tapped from the factory.

I use a Trijicon RMR and I feel that it has improved my shooting. The "motion" of the red dot has indicated that I need to utilize a better grip and breathing. The improvement has helped even with my pistols with open sights. Just my results.
Note: I hope to get a Vortex Sparc II soon to try a tube sight and see if that will help with with " picking up" the dot more rapidly.
