S&W & Walther.
is there a connection between S&W & walther?
i happened on the walther forum looking for info. on their PPK .380, & saw some references to S&W & walther from a member there having issues with a PPK pistol.
someone on the forum suggested she contact S&W.
is there a connection or did i miss something?
thanx,
trailblazer

S&W is the primary importer of Walther products (though not the only one apparently).

Hi Trailblazer, They are in a panternship arrangement of some kind. S&W imports the Walthers. You will see both names on some of the handguns.
Thank you for your service, Mac
Wurtsmith Sept.66-Nov.67, Utapao Nov.67-Nov.68, Wurtsmith Dec.68-Jan.70 and Selfridge 71-72

Interarms imported Walther pistols until 1999 when the company went out of business.

Also, there are some pistols owned and licensed by Walther, but for some reason they aren't or can't be imported (not sure which) and they're being manufactured by the S&W Springfield plant.
Those pistols are marked as "Walther by Smith & Wesson" if I remember correctly.

I forgot to mention.
My wife just bought a Walther PPS and it has both the Smith and the Walther logo's on it. It was made in Germany.
It's an excellent pistol, no matter who made it.

They are the same. When the sear block failed on my Walther P99 I sent it back to S&W. Despite the official warranty from Walther only being one year, the gun being a 2002 model, and my having purchased it used, S&W replaced the sear block at no charge.

The sw99 and p99 are virtually idential. Smith and Walther collaborated on the development of this polymer frame (made by Walther in Germany) and stainless slide/barrel made by s&w. Just how much more they are in bed together I don't know. The sw99 gave way to the M&P series. I have had both in .40 cal; both are great guns, but I think the M&P is better.

which leads to my next question. evidently S&W does not feel walthers are direct competion, else, why would the market a competing line of pistols?
is the any advantage to owning a walther?
good info as usual guys...thanx.
