Default Model 41 magazine followers

Just curious... when did S&W switch from a metal magazine follower to a black plastic one? Thanks.

I thought you'd get better responses in the pistol section. chad

Dunno. I do know they made some 12-round Model 41 magazines with red followers shortly before the "assault weapons ban" prohibited the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds. I have one of these; I don't think they make them currently.

I still see the 12 round magazines for sale... won't ship to Kalifornia though.

Question 10-rnd vs. 12-rnd followers?

Midway and Cheaper Than Dirt show the current availability of 12 round Mod. 41 mags. Are the mag bodies the same length as the 10-rnd. ones? If so, the obvious solution to the added two (2) round capacity is a shortened follower.

My older Mod. 41 manual (circa 1980) only shows a 12 round mag -- I assume these older mags also had a metal follower.

Am I off base here?

TTFN,
F.

The magazine bodies are the same on the 10 and 12 rounders and I think you're right, the followers are just different. However, I don't think the 12 round versions ever had metal followers.

Here are two examples of disassebled magazines. These are the older style metal follower versions. The top one is a 10 round Model 41 mag and the bottom one is a 5 round .22 short Model 41-1 mag.

Thanks for the photo, civil1977. Do you (or anyone else) have a pic of the 10-rnd follower vs. the 12-rnd. follower?

BTW, I'm a Civil Engineer, too -- MIT Class of '70. Yeah, an old fart. But I didn't get out while I had the chance- MSCE and Ph.D., too!

TIA for your reply,

Nice. Glad to see some other engineers on here. There are at least a couple of CE's I've talked to here on the forum.

I don't have any 12 round mags or plastic follower mags, but here is a picture of the metal followers in the Model 41 and Model 41-1 mags.

Probably they won't export to New Zealand because NZ requires an import certificate before the mags can enter the country, and vendors don't want to have their merchandise in limbo in New Zealand while someone dreams up a good reason why he needs a 10 round pistol magazine.
