Question Need some advice on changing grips

I have a 3913TSW and want to put a set of Hogue's on it. I've removed the pin at the bottom of the grips on the 3913 but I can't get them to break loose so I can take them off. I Don' wont to scratch the frame of the pistol or ruin the original S&W grips by prying them off. Help please!!! Also, the Hogues came with a little black thing with two small screws on either side of it. I guess you remove them and put the little black piece somewhere inside the Hogue grips and use the screws to attach both panels to the frame ?????. Any help would be very much appreciated.
++ where can I get a picture and parts breakdown of the pistol.
Thanks,
JimK

Default changing grips

Jim ,look at the bottom of thefactory grips on your pistol, there is a hole there, after you remove the grip pin ,bottom of the backstrap,it removes either way ,use a punch, then take the pin or use your puncn, place it in the hole in the bottom of the grips and pry away from the frame they should pop loose. Inside the spring cap and spring will fall off the stirrup , slide the spring back on,clean up the frame light brush or rag, then cap the spring, place the small black piece you got with your grips, over the spring cap and snap it into the bottom of the back strap ,REPLACE THE GRIP PIN,you may have to press up on the black piece to help the pin through and it should tap into place, that will leave you with two exposed holes on either side of the frame, look at the grip panels inside you will see that the have lips that snap into the open areas of the frame, ,the only thing you need to be careful to not bend or hang up the left panel on the sideplate(left side of your frame) it can be broken if you put too much upward force on it snap the grip panels into place ,screw in the two grip screws and your done.DONT over tighten,Snug them up good ,let them settle for afew days and tighten them again.Test afterward that empty magazines, lock the slide to the rear and will fall free from the pistol and that the hammer functions properly (MAKE SURE ITS EMPTY FIRST !!and you should be good to go .Just dont force the grip panels on, adjust them and they should just pop on. good luck Bob

Smile Changing 3913 grips

I can't thank you enough Bob. Looks and sounds a little intimidating but nothing ventured nothing gained so what the heck.....I'll give it a go.

Default Changing grips

Wanted to thank the folks on this thread for all the good tips and advice. I recently acquired a Smith 5906 from CDNN. Needed some work (cleaning up, etc) and I wanted to change the Hogue grips it came with for some factory grips. Obtained my parts, read all I could, and today installed the grips. Thanks to the tips on this thread and others, mission accomplished.

She looks like new.

Shoot some Kroil in the hole where the pin is. Sometimes they are real hard to remove.

Thank You Calreb & Jsbethel,
I recently purchased a Model 6906 ex-police dept. The gun looks
pretty good except for holster wear on the grips. I've ordered a
new set of S&W grips, & the instructions & tips both of you have
provided will be helpful when I install the new set. Thanks again!

Can I use a s&w 59 wood grip on my s&w 659? If I have to modify it is it much trouble to do?

Be careful when replacing factory grips.

Doing it incorrectly can risk damage to the sideplate. It can also result in improper seating which doesn't let the safety/decocking lever move downward sufficiently.
