i've got a 639, think from the early 80's or late 70's, got it from the old man who bought it used,love it, over 500 rounds of misc. ammo and no ftf,ftl,nothin. cant find acces or spare parts, any web sites known?

grips, extra or extended mags,rear sight (have boat ramp adjustable rear)just haven't seen many accessories for this

Extra magazines are readily available from S&W, and aftermarket magazines are available from many sources (it uses the same magazines as the Model 39, if that helps in your searching). I highly recommend sticking with S&W factory magazines, as most of the aftermarket magazines (and, especially, the "extended" magazines) have a rather well-deserved reputation for being unreliable, at best, or, often, not working at all. As to grips, again, anything for the Model 39 will fit (same grip frame shape and dimensions). As to sights, you may be limited to the factory adjustables, which actually work quite well. There may be some replacement sights available, but I haven't researched that. Any holster for a 39 or 59 will work, as well as those for many of the later variants (5906, etc.), just make sure they are for the 4" barrel guns, not the shorter barrel guns offered in some of the later (second or third generation) guns. Replacement parts are available from many sources, for instance, I recently replaced the recoil spring, extractor spring and firing pin spring in my 39-2 with Wollf springs, same springs for the 639. If you buy the gun, I'm sure you will enjoy it, the grip frame is one of the best feeling of any semi-auto ever made.

Most of what's been said is spot on, with one possible exception on the Grips. If your 639 has an ambidextrous decocker/safety (2 of my 3 639's came with ambi's, one didn't), then Grips for the 1st Gen 39's will not work very well. The 39's did not have ambi safeties so the right side grip panel does not have the top of the grip relieved to allow the ambi safety to come fully down and engage. You'll need to find grips made for the 4/5/639 2nd Gen series. If your 639 doesn't have the ambi safety, then any 1st or 2nd Generation grips will work great.

The 639 is my all time favorite Smith, they are great handguns, good luck with yours!!

Greetings to all! I have a 639 I have owned since 1985. It has the following serial # - TAC7464. It does not have the front ramp sights I have seen on other models, but instead has the fixed rear sights. It is a magnificent specimen, not a scratch on it. Does anyone know what the TAC represents and what it's value might be? I have the original box and tools to go with it.

The TAC is just the serial number prefix used during the year of manufacture of your 639. That just means your 639 was made in late 1984 or possibly 1985. It should have a rounded trigger guard, if not, it was probably made in late 1985. I'm not sure about the number of fixed versus adjustable sights on the 639, but it seems there are more adjustable sight models, and ambi safety models seem to be the hardest to find.....here are my three, all fixed sight, two of which have ambi safeties, an only one has the round trigger guard......it has the early "A" prefix......

Wow, those sure are beautiful 639's! And you have THREE of them. You know you can't shoot all THREE of them, at least not at the same time...

You're right, but honestly, one has never been fired since new, one has not been fired much at all, and the other has thousands of rounds through it, I bought it as a police trade in and used to use it alot, it still sees range time....

Thanks for all the input! Mine does have have the ambi safety, fixed rear sights and the squared off trigger guard as opposed to the rounded one. These are, in my opinion, some of the best looking pistols I have ever seen. Very accurate, very reliable. Does anyone know of any recalls that might affect the value of these pistols?

Just found this thread! My 639 has the round trigger guard, fixed sights, ambi decocker and an "A" prefix serial. Must be early production. Not much info on these in SCSW. My favorite semi auto.

Here's a picture with a couple of ideas:
Grips are Pachmeyer. Rear sight is Millet adjustable target. Front is a green fiber optic. Don't everyone rag on me for screwing up a good 639. I bought this for about $200 because someone else had tried to install aftermarket sights and messed it up. I had my 'smith weld up the old holes and re-mil standard dovetails to install these sights (originally for a 1911). Had the action slicked up too.
Has been a favorite of mine ever since.

Grif84.. I sure wish you would make it to one of our NE Ohio Bunch meetings. (WE just had it last week) It will be April/May for the next one. I would love to see your semi auto collection. Many guys bring their wheel guns.. including me but I like to bring some newer era pistols. They are the new generation. Last years someone had a collection of all variations made of the Model 52 including the protoype and last one ever produced.
I don't have such a collection.. way more modest. But you look like you could really teach us all something. Please think about coming.
Also the annual S&W collectors association meeting is in Columbus this year.. June I think.

I just bought a model 639. It came with only one mag and after test firing, it would not feed the last round in the mag. If I loaded 8 rounds in the mag, it worked well for the first 7 rounds but would not feed the 8th round. if I only loaded 6 rounds, it would not feed ( it jammed) on the 6th round. The cartridge would only go about 1/4 of its length into the chamber and then the slide would jam.I took some mags from my 39-2 pistol and finally found a mag that would allow the weapon to shoot everything in the mag. I have ordered 2 new mags.

Another problem is that if I put a mag in the mag well that has a finger extension, ( or sometimes even a flat bottom mag) during firing sometimes the mag would drop down about a 1/4 inch which would then not allow the pistol to fire. Is this a mag release problem? I did set the mag firmly prior to beginning to shoot so I fear the mag release/catch may be malfunctioning. Any thoughts from anyone?

Welcome to the forum.

Always to good idea to replace mag and recoil springs on a new weapon with an unknown history. I'll bet that will fix the feed problem.

Bought new mag springs and a new guide rod spring ( 16lb vs 14lb factory original ) and the weapon functions flawlessly.

Your 639 is a great addition to any collection of S&W pistols. I have been searching for a 639 myself for a long time, and although they are out there, most have the adjustable rear sights like yours. I would love to find one with the fixed rear sights so I need to keep looking.
