Default 910... Budget Guns??..

Why are the S&W 910 autos referred to as 'Budget Guns'?...
What is it in the materials, manufacturing, quality, etc... that gives them this label?
Any owners with input on their quality, pro's/con's?
Thanks

Compared to the very similar 915, the 910 had a (post-ban) 10-round magazine. The milling contours on the metal parts were less complex, and the sights and recoil spring guide rod (among other minor parts) were plastic instead of metal. I don't have a 910, but I think others have commented they work fine. Think "Budget" as in less complex and expensive to build, and therefore a lower price.

Just like the Model 28 Highway Patrolman was a "budget" version of the Model 27 .357, the main difference in the 910 was the finish. Mechanically, it is identical to the more-expenive pistols in the line.

As S&W steel third generation guns started heading towards a $1,000 retail there was a need for a "Value Series" of guns. They are very good guns for those who prefer a medal gun as opposed to partial tupperware.

my nephew has one I did a 'spray&bake' on, shoots better than a pistol in that price range has a right to.

The economy series pistols lack the nicely milled lines of the standard 3rd Gen models. They also lack serrations or checkering on the frontstrap. Sights and mag releases are usually plastic.

The 910 is a very nice and durable pistol. At the $350 to $400 price point they were indeed a value.

I got right at 20,000 rounds through an early production 910 before I cracked a frame rail on it. Trained lots of folks with it, and got my moneys worth.

I would not pay more than $425 for one. When going over that amount I'd find a nice 5904.

These days, the model 915 is the only real value out there IMO. Think 910 with all metal parts and a lug on the barrel for tighter lock up. Very underated pistol that can still be found for around $300 or so. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI.
