Default 5944

Picked up this nice, clean 5944 last week. The serial number prefix is TEY.
The previous owner said it sat in a drawer for about 15 years.Any idea on the date of manufacture?
Thanks, Mike

Probably going to date around '91-92, the only years the 5944 was made. The square trigger guards were gone by late '92. You can call S&W customer service and they can give you the exact ship date off the serial number. There were never very many 5944s' produced.

What an awesome find, the elusive 5944. From the slide marking and the square trigger guard your 5944 was definitely one of the earliest DAO offerings from S&W. Did it come with the box? And please don't tell me you got it for $150 or something like that.

That's good stuff right there.

Awesome find and I HOPE you can tell us you got it for $150 because that would make it even better.

Very sharp pistol sir, congratulations!

It's funny to see it with a square trigger guard. I have a 5946 with one, I've only seen another, in a movie. Must make them a bit rare.

Only the very first production S&W DAO's have the hooked trigger guard. I believe the DAO's were only in production for months or maybe a year or so (not years) when S&W made the change to the round trigger guards. I do not believe the 5944 continued to be manufactured after that change (or at least I have never seen a 5944 with a round guard).

It did come with the box and the S&W wrapping paper. The second magazine was still wrapped in the same paper. No manual or tools however.

There were some round guard 5944s made. SmithNut has one pictured here.

The "Spec.Ord" is a julian date and will give you a good idea of when it was made.

Default 5944 Label

Here's a picture of the label on the end of the box.
