Newbie and 5906 for Carry Questions

Tempted to get one of the police turn in 5906s but I have to say I dont know athing about them or for that matter any of the S&W semi pistols.

Up to this point Ive been a 1911 and SIG shooter and like both the 45 acp and 9mm round. I hand load for both.

Ive got a SIG P6 which is a 8 round 9mm and of course the 45s I have are also 8 rounders. Im intersted in the 5906 because they are 9mm, Stainless and hold more than the 8 rounds Im use to.

The 5906 would be a carry pistol and after doing some reading of the other semi S&W semsi Im wondering if that is a good choice...for Conceal Carry.

Would the lighter weight versions would be a better option?

Being that the 5906 features a double stack magazine is it alot wider then the 1911?

Im interested in the 5906 as they seem real reasonable in price and from what Ive read are very trouble free.

Ideas please.

The 5906 is an excellent gun, but I opted for the lighter weight alloy framed 5903 for concealed carry. It made a difference for me and is much easier on the hip. The alloy frame full size guns are easy to carry and conceal, but if you want to take it step farther you can opt for the double stack compact 6906 (which is also alloy framed). Both are double stack but not as wide as most autos and only slightly thicker than a 1911. No matter what you choose, you cannot go wrong with a 3rd Gen 9mm.

While I've had not problem concealing my 1911 or issued M9 or 226. Weight issue at the end of a long day is. Thats why for years I carried either my Lightweight Officers or same sized 6906. Never had any realiablity issues with my Smith 3rd Gens.

as said the 06 is a fairly heavy pistol. the alloy framed are noticeable lighter. all good guns.

The 5906 is a good choice if weight isn't an issue. For me, it is. It's odd that in my younger days I could tuck a Colt Government Model or Combat Commander on my right hip and never noticed it. Apparently my spare tire works against a steel framed gun. 5903s don't seem to be too common, but plenty of 910/915s are out there at less than $300 if you don't insist on pristine condition. These will shoot every bit as well as the 59XX and, of course, use the same magazines.

The 5906 is near in weight to a full sized all steel 1911.

It could be harder to conceal however. The 5906 can hold as many as 17 rounds from Mec Gar. These are high quality magazines.
