Default Recoil Buffer for Model 41 . . . ??

I have an older Model 41 which continues to be very reliable and accurate. Never have used a recoil buffer but wonder if adding one to the Model 41 would be worthwhile . . . ?

I think this comes under the heading of "If not Broken do not 'fix'".
I assume you shoot mostly SV.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I was about to order a recoil buffer from Midway but will now delete that item from the order.

I agree with you on not fixing something that ain't broke . . .

Appreciate your help . . . again!

I agree!
Some people are hell bent on shooting HV in this target pistol - perhaps its a cost thing or the louder 'bang' - in these cases a buffer would be desirable.

Default Basic Rethink?

Yes, but a basic rethink of what you are doing would be even better.
Much .22 LR is Sub-Sonic (below 1120 FPS) and is usually measured from a 18” barrel. It is going to be at 900 FPS and change from your 5-7” pistol.
This is all fine for the M41 although some of it will not chamber well which is a separate problem. The chambering and accuracy problem is why CCI-SV is often recommended as an economical way to go.
The super, hyper, mach 47 stuff is not going to be going much faster from your pistol (950?), but it will slam the slide and make a bigger bang, etc, etc. none of which is good for your accuracy or the pistol.

I would rather shoot that kind of stuff from a rifle where you will get some of the speed you paid for while keeping the 41 in as good a shape as possible.

I put one in mine so I could shoot HV in it (made a great plinker) and it worked fine, and it didn't harm anything when shooting SV. It was a well-spent $8

How can a recoil buffer hurt anything? I use them in all my guns. The only downside is that they need to be replaced periodically. The hammering they take saves the frame and slide. Some guns (with alloy frames) need them and and are designed with them in place.

Default Recoil buffer for Model 41

Seems like Buffer technologies have discontinued the buffer for the S&W 41

Yeah, I hated to see this because I use one. The good news is they seem to last forever and when I ordered mine I ordered a spare, but I hope someone else starts to produce them again.

Here is a pic of the "damage" done to my slide using CCI SV. This was before I decided to use a buffer, and was caused by SV ammo.
The slide was hitting the very front of the trigger guard, where it goes up inside the frame on recoil.
This part is the designed "slide stop".
The recoil buffer will stop this happening, regardless of SV or HV ammo.

Just FYI,
there is nothing "magical" about the recoil buffer.
Any "U" shaped piece of softish plastic will work. You just need to get the shape right so that it sides down over the recoil spring.
If it is too thick, the slide will no travel rearwards enough to eject the fired round, so 1/4" would be plenty.
It also has to allow the trigger guard to come up fully.
As i said, it is not hard.

I got mine from Bulls Eye Gear. looks like this ......

seriously easy to make your own, and if it somehow does not work, just remove it, it will not damage anything.

It is not in a critical area where a broken piece of plastic will jamb up or damage anything.

I felt like it softened recoil a bit, surely a good thing for the metal parts and also might just help get you back on target .001seconds faster.

Leinster Lad If the SV caused that kind of damage in your M41 can you imagine just how bad it would look if you had been shooting the HV ammo. I just checked my 1958 m41 and have no where's near that amount of damage or wear on mine as is showing on yours.

Correct Barrie, that is why I got the buffer !!

But it looks like my M41 is unique in the amount of wear that it is showing for such a young gun......... and i only ever use CCI SV.....

Well, isn't that a form of discontinuing?

Maybe someone will come along to replace them, but I agree, if someone is thinking about maybe getting one, better act now.

This is almost exactly what my model 41 slide looks like. I bought my pistol in what looks like almost new condition, but was told that the previous owner had used it in a league shoot for one season using standard velocity ammo. I have used a buffer in it since I have owned it. Like teletech said, I feel that it reduces felt recoil, is quieter, and has to lessen the shock and wear to the pistol. I will continue to use a buffer as long as I can get them.
