Default trying to find some info(police weapons)

i was just curious if anybody knew what the Amarillo police department used around 1986,1987 time frame is there a place that I can find that out?

My father worked with the Amarillo PD for a few years and now that he's gone I can't ask him and I would like to know so maybe I can pick one up. I thought it was some type of s&w but other than that I don't know.

The internet is your friend :-). Looks like officer choice with limits on caliber.

"TenBrink, who has been with APD for 31 years, said he is one of only two people on the force who carry the .41. His weapon of choice is a Smith and Wesson .41 Magnum, model 58.

On Jan. 1, 1990, a department rule was changed and new recruits were no longer given the option of a .357 or a .41 magnum, TenBrink said. The standard issue today is either a 9 mm or a .45 magnum."

Amarillo.com | Local News: Officers' firearms aren't all the same 04/16/07

BTW I am sure the ".45 magnum" is reporter error.

I'd suggest calling their Rangemaster during normal working hours. Explain your dad used to be a member and ask for their help.

Good Luck!

Officers that worked there then, depending on when they hired on, would have purchased in the academy/carried a Model 66, or possibly L-frame .357. Many that bought 66s in the late 1970s/early 80s sold them and bought 58s and 57s ASAP. Around 1988, auto pistols were authorized (5906 and a couple of others) and 586s/686s were the last revolvers being used at about that time, last revolvers sold at the academy and were only sold a short time. In 1990, officers could no longer choose auto or revolver, had to go with an approved auto.
PM me and perhaps I can provide more detail.
