Default Finally shot my 4506...this thing is a laser...

This is a LE trade in I recently purchased. This is a super nice weapon. I assume the trigger has been worked as the reset is very short and pull nice and smooth without being too light. Double action is smooth as well with a small "click" in the beginning The heft really reduces recoil and gets you on target a tad quicker than say my P220. I had also worked a trade where I recieved a M&P in 40 the day before this purchase. At first "feel" I thought the M&P may take over the top spot as my fav gun but, not a chance. The 4506 and my beloved 220 are neck and neck, for now. The '06 need some new sights to replaced the gone factory nights and she will be all good.

A few more range sessions and the 4506 will knock that 220 out of the top spot.

Good luck with your new gun. I find that I like my 4506-1 better than my Sig 220 Elite.

Glad to see another happy S&W owner. I noticed you said there was a click in the trigger pull. If you notice the click only in the single-action trigger pull, there is a quick and simple fix for it.

The click is in single action. I assume it is no real problem just kind of annoying. But if I can get rid of it that would be cool.

Thanks

My 4566TSW did the same thing and it is pretty common issue, and a very easy fix. I found the other thread on the forum that deals with the issue. First, you take off the slide, and if you cock the hammer back, and pull the trigger a short ways you can see where the bent-tab is causing friction. If you take a pencil with a fairly new and flat eraser, you can gently push on the top of the tab and bend it just a little towards the muzzle of the gun. I didn't apply much pressure or bend it a lot, just a lot of guess and check. Best part is you can check it with the slide off to make sure you have adjusted enough to stop catching in single-action.

Here is a link to the original posting, as this is a pretty common issue with the 4566 as well. New to Me 4566 has a clicking problem

Here is a great shot of the tab you need to adjust. (Also in other posting.) When you cock the hammer, and pull the trigger a little ways, you can tell where the tab is clicking. Just a minor amount of adjustment should eliminate the issue.

Which tab requires adjustment; is it the middle tab that is riveted in place or the ears on either side? Thanks

Yes. Once the slide is off, cock the hammer for single-action. If you pull the trigger slightly you can see where the "click" is coming from. Then the applying some pressure to bend that tab forward, should get it so that the contact isn't made, and the "click" disappears.

My 20 year old 4506 is one of the very few 45's I've owned that straight out of the box would feed anything and everything. It's never had a FTF, stovepipe, FTE or any other malfunction.

I keep it stoked with CorBon 200 gr HPs which feed like hardball. No finer pistol was ever made by S&W and-it's all steel!

Those tabs are gone in mine. I can see where they were. As the trigger is pulled, the piece it activates moves slightly up and clicks. I dont think it is a real problem just an annoyance.

Some Police Departments had the trigger play spring left out or had them taken out due to it braking easily and is really not needed in the function of the pistol. CHP had this done on there 4006 and 4006TSW.

The 4506 is a dang fine gun. I shoot mine better then any 1911 I have every owned. I had a 4526 that was a tack driver too. Mine is a 4506-1 with adjustable sights that was used by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

I am pretty confused about this here spring. If clearly the
spring is not needed, my faith in S&W is that they never
would have put it in there in the first place. So what
is the purpose of the spring? What are we doing without
when the spring is removed ?

Scott,

The trigger play spring just takes up the looseness or slack of the trigger in single action. Gives a better feel to it for take up and easy reset. A extra thing that is not needed for function but for comfort of the shooter.

If you do a search here for Trigger Play Spring you should find some very informative posts and some more insight from Forum Member Fastbolt who is a retired Police S&W Armorer. He can explain it in more detail then I can.

The 4506 is a lot better gun to me than the Sig 220. I have shot a lot with each of my model 4506 guns and have even loaned one to another owner of a Sig 220 until he can find a 4506 of his own. None of mine guns for sale but if I did, the Sig would be gone.

I purchased a SW1911 Performance last week and I doubt it will replace the 4506 in my list of favorites.

In regards to your nite sights, if they are Trijicon's send the slide to Trijicon and they will re-lamp them for $54.00 and extend your warranty for another 13 years. I did that with two 4006's that were PD trade in's. Much cheaper than buying new sights! They are also very speedy in doing so. Both of mine were done in about a week including shipping both ways.

Really? Wow, I will have to take a look. I hate 3 dots but for 54.00 I could possibly live with them.

I have this same pistol - an early 4506 with the hooked trigger guard - and it's my favorite 45! I much prefer it to a 1911. Eats everything I feed it. I have several thousand rounds through mine without a single malfunction of any kind. I hale a little trigger work in this gun (not a pull weight adjustment, just smooth with a crisp SA break) and it's easily the best SA/DA trigger I've ever used and better than many worked SA triggers.

In case it wasn't clear - I like my 4506.

I am the same. I don't own a 220 elite, but I did own a 220 W. German model that was tragically stolen by a troubled family member and pawned off somewhere.

But, I like the 4506 better than I liked it and like it better than my other current .45, the Glock 21(probably not popular around these parts...).

I want to put night sites on mine.

I can't imagine why. One thing about the 4506-IF it ever failed to fire, you can always render blunt force trauma with it. Try that with an alloy frame.

The 4506 pistols get a bad rap because of heavy weight but
if you put one on a scale you will find it weighs within one
ounce of a full size 1911 Govt model. That is not to say
a 1911 is small or light, you just have to remember the
4506 is an Offensive weapon and not designed to be a concealable
disappear conceal carry type.

I see you are new to this thread. What specific spring did you use
and where did you get it ? Are you loading your own 45 Super
or buying from Buffalo Bore ? There are no other sources are
there ? If you are loading your own, where did you find the
recipes ?

Man, the more I shoot it, the more I love it. This thing is a laser. Shoots lights out with cheapo WWB and Fed. 230 ball. And this with blacked out faded night sights. I was also shooting my P220 and M&P and while the M&P is a close second, my beloved 220 is left flailing in comparison. Probably not totally fair as the 4506 has to have some trigger work and I have the Apex kit in the M&P while the 220 trigger is stock. Part of the issue is I hold as high as possible and that means my thumb drags on the slide stop and or decocker on the 220 where as I have no issues with my other two. Just cannot seem to find a comfortable hold on the 220 now that I have experience with my other pistols. The thought of selling the 220 for a M&P 45 has crossed my mind......... more than once

I would like to add one thing to this thread about the 4506 that has not been mentioned to this point. It is a very 'soft' shooting 45. I have had far more experience with Colt 1911's than my early square trigger guard model 4506, so when I began shooting the 4506, I immediately noticed the softer recoil, at least compared to the 1911 (I have no experience with the Sig 220 in this regard). It seems to shoot with a push rather than an abrupt sharp recoil. I attribute this to the frame design and overall size of the 4506. Regardless, it is apparent to me that the Smith is every bit as accurate, more reliable, and softer shooting that any of my Government model Colts. That being said, I enjoy shooting my Colts more than my 4506. They carry better, are single action only, and nothing......repeat nothing.......feels like a Government model in the hand. JMHO.

It is an easy shooter for sure. I think the weight and grip angle make it much more enjoyable and accurate to shoot than my P220. I had a Kimber 1911 and this is as close to a 1911 that one can get.

I let my P220 go when the 4506 came into the picture. Tried as I may I never could bond with the P220. It felt right in the hand and seemed to point naturally but I just could not shoot well with it. The 4506, by contrast, has been a tack driver in my hands from the first round.

I had a Sig 220R; a fine pistol in every way. But I ended up keeping a 4506 as my TDA 45ACP.

Among other reasons, I never could quite get over Sig putting the slide release where the "frame safety" should be.
