I have been looking around trying to see what smith auto I want to go with my M&Ps. I want one in .40 and DAO and no external safety. What are my options. I have been eyeing a 4043 but i want to know what are the rest of my options.

I own a 4043, it's a great pistol; light, accurate and with a very good trigger.

There's also the 4053 and 4044.

4046 here. I guess you could call it a full sized, all stainless pistol. Bought mine as a police trade-in. Coming from one who is used to a 1911, it has a great trigger that was easier than I expected to get used to and enough heft that I really do not notice much recoil. I've been shooting it lately in IDPA instead of my 1911.

As far as duty type pistols go, 4043 and 4046 are the first two that come to mind. I suppose there were TSW versions. I do not recall without looking at the "Melvin Wheel" if there were blue equivalents.

IIRC, there were no blue, steel framed 3rd gen .40's or 9mm.

I could be wrong.

As to the OP, 4046 is the way I'd go.

The 4044 is the blue carbon steel frame/slide.

The 4044 uses the code indicating a blued carbon slide with black alluminum frame.

xxx0 = unobtanium frame
xxx3 = alloy frame in grey
xxx4 = alloy frame in black
xxx5 = carbon steel frame
xxx6 = stainless steel frame (except the 6906)

Confirmed with Standard Catalog: 4046 is the ONLY cataloged DAO third gen .40 with a steel frame.

A ha. It was listed in the text but not in the recap.

Based on the description, it sounds like a 6906-size gun.

Thanks.

KurtC, and Stu454,

Pardon my quick typing, sorry, you are correct on the 4044.

I believe S&W also used to list parts for a 4026 which would be a steel frame, de-cocker (not a DAO model asked for in the OP)?

So if I purchased a 410. Could I remove the safety and get a plug for the hole? And it looks like these have plasic guide rods? Is there a metal one to replace it? My friend has a 908 or a 910 and I think his is plastic and he hasnt had any issues but I would like a metal rod on mine.

The "plug" that replaces the safety is called a "firing pin retainer." You can find it on the factory parts lists for DAO models.

You would also need to convert the trigger and hammer to DAO versions as well. The 410 has an alloy frame, not steel.
