Hello,
I recently acquired an excellent/almost NIB 659 that spent most of the last 23 years in a drawer as a police officer's back-up duty weapon. I have looked through the threads on this forum, and not found too much information/opinions on the 659. What are your honest thoughts/opinions on the 659; good, bad, or indifferent? What are the strong/weak points or this model? Is this one that you would keep as a shooter...or trade for something else (like a third generation)? I would love to hear what you have to say. This particular gun has fixed sights and a "TBB" serial number prefix (approx. 1987 manufacture). Thanks for any information/opinions you may have on this,

Jim (kean57)

They are as reliable as any other second or third generation S&W 9mm, which is, pretty reliable if not dinked with. The main difference between it and a 5906 is the grips. If the one you have fits your hand, I don't think you would be much ahead trading it off for a newer 5906.

Kind of heavy for CCW. Great range gun. With the stainless steel frame, there is very little recoil. Magazines are easy to find.

I agree with Buff, they are excellent. This was one of the last of the 2nd gen 59 series and about perfected ... and then the 3rd gen guns showed up. Like 3rd gen guns, they are hard to beat for reliability and accuracy.:)

I have had a couple of 659's with the fixed sights and round trigger guard. They are excellant pistols and if you don't mind the weight they are great. The down side is trying to sell them. Both of mine took over three years to find a buyer and were finally sold for $250.00 each. Never understood this problem as in my mind they were great pistols.
