Weird.

My tracking # this afternoon said it was in G-boro, and expected delivery date was Monday (7-19).

Now it says "billing information received".
This sounds like what it would say before the item would even be picked up.
I would have thought that if it had been delivered, it would say "delivered".

Anyone with a little more familiarity with UPS know what this means?
I'm confused...

I was in Bud's yesterday as well, and picked up 2 4553TSW's. I hand picked these 2 and both are in 90%, but others that were left were a little rougher. I am very happy with my 2, but haven't shot them yet.

Buds was crazy yesterday. There had to be 50 people in there when I was there around 1pm. The S&W's were being heavily looked at and going fast.

Here's some pics of mine -

Ordered one too, my 2 cents worth...one of the finest pistols I've ever been issued and shot was a SW 1076 issued to us in the FBI in the early '90s. The weapon was flawless and I had to turn it in around 2000 for one of these goofy Glocks. If the 4585 is half the weapon the 1076's were, we got a steal. Wonder where we can get some spare mags for 'em???

It looked like a deal to me too, so I ordered one yesterday. From what I've read, it's almost exactly the same size as my P220 [but heavier] with NS's that I keep in my nightstand. If the NS on the 4586 work, I have a pistol for the other nightstand.

Has anyone received one yet? I just wondered how they looked.

Very nice 4553TSW's Steel609, congrats! Thanks for sharing the pics.

I'm starting to get anxious to get my hands on my 4553TSW. Should be here Friday. Regards 18DAI.

Thanks for the pics Steel, it looks like you picked a couple of nice ones. The frames look immaculate!!

My 4586TSW and 4553TSW should be at my dealer's tomorrow, I hope they're as nice as yours but won't be holding my breath.

I can believe that. I had called Barry last week and asked him to put one, the 4586, back for me to pick up today. He did me right! Mine has a little holster wear and the night sights are a little dim, but still very usable. I would rate the finish at 90%+.

While I was waiting on him to finish the paperwork, I field stripped it and it looks like it was never fired. Must have been the chief's.

I fired both mags with 185g R-P JHP just to make sure it functioned. Not a hiccup. I've read elsewhere that the 4586 will cycle empty brass from the mag. It will, six cases as fast as I could rack the slide.

I've bought several weapons at Bud's and have never had less that exceptional service and their prices are hard to beat.

Cool. I reserved mine Saturday and sent a money order today. They say they need the $$ within 7 days. I sure hope it makes it. The post office said it should be there by Thursday.

Mine is on the big brown bird as well, scheduled to hit the upper left coast on Wednesday.

I'm pretty happy that they shipped it UPS 2-day, I was scheduled to leave on vacation this Friday, and the poor thing might have had to sit in the safe at the FFL for 2 weeks.

Put my name on one of the 4586TSWs on the Police Supply side, I must have gotten one of the last ones because I checked it a while ago and it was sold out.

Picked mine up from my FFL last night.

Looks good, somewhere b/w 85-90%, night sights are really dim, though.

Grip is slim, but long front to back, thanks to the .45 ACP.
I think I may try to get some Hogues to see if that'll change the grip to fit my hands better.

This is my first S&W 3rd Gen (or any gen) SA, and the DAO wasn't what I was expecting.
The pull isn't bad, not too heavy, a little bit of travel.
But I wasn't expecting to have to cock it every time to test the trigger. I was thinking the DAO was going to be like dry firing a DA/SA gun, just pull the trigger.
Seems to me this is almost a SAO, in that you have to rack the slide before being able to dry-fire.

Also wasn't aware that it had a mag disconnect, but I guess I can live with that if I have to.
Is there a way to disable this?

I haven't shot it yet, I hope to maybe this week.

Overall, I'm very pleased. Not bad, it's a lot of gun for the little $$$.

Yes, the early Smith DAO feel like they almost single action. The pistol is actually half cocked by the slide, the trigger has very little to do.

You can remove the mag safety by first removing the rear sight. Good luck with that.

FYI, found out from the folks at Bud's that most of these came from police/SO's in the Newport News, VA area...

I was at Bud's again this morning and asked about the out of stock/in stock listing. Apparently their inventory control is weird. As an example, if they have 100 weapons on the shelf and sell 50, the 50 get sent to shipping, but the system counts the 50 twice until they are actually shipped. They have 50 weapons on the shelf and have 50 sold, so the computer thinks there are none left. After the 50 have shipped, there are still 50 on the shelf, so now there are 50 available. Please don't ask me why, it was all I could do to understand when it was explained to me.

They were getting down to 15-20 of the 4586's left at 10 a.m.

When I was an LEO in the Tidewater area NNPD issued the 4586. Hampton also had a 3rd gen .45, but I think theirs were 4566, or perhaps some other DA/SA .45. I don't know what the Newport News and Hampton SOs issued. I was on the south side of the bridge where the 9mm ruled. IIRC only Chesapeake PD issued anything other than 9mm. My agency had the 5946 and 6946 at the time.

My 4586 is at the dealer. I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

Picked mine up this evening. The cosmetics are similar to the example pictured on Bud's website with a little less holster wear at the muzzle. Mine has Hogue grips; I'd have preferred the factory ones though. The night sights are a little dim but working. Frankly, I wasn't expecting them to glow at all. Field stripping it revealed nice internals that only show a slight amount of wear. For a police gun, it was surprisingly clean inside and out.

All in all a great value for the money. I'm very pleased.

Clean inside. Shoots good. Trigger pull good.
Some rust and pitting on both sides of the slide...will take more than Mothers to polish out. Not bad for $259.

Nice photos, thank you. Those slide markings seem like those I've seen on recent, not-supposed-to-be-made-anymore-models, did your box match the pistol and if so, what was the Julian date?

Also, are some of those markings laser-etched? I was going to say hit it hard with green Scotchbrite pads and buy a set of Smith & Wesson Factory Grips Straight S&W 4563TSW, 4566TSW, 4583TSW, 4586TSW, 1006, 1066, 1086, 4505, 4506, 4546, 4566, 4567, 4586, 4596 - MidwayUSA and it's be good as new but I think you might take at least that S&W emblem off if you go over it with Scrotchbrite.

Congrats on your new pistols guys.

Ordered mine at 0700 hours yesteday. I was the 50th (yes) caller in line. Should be here in a day or so. I am so happy. My first S&W auto. I have heard it is heavy. Heavy? Who cares? What is heavy? I carried a Model 19 .357 with a 6 inch in a shoulder and also a belt for years. Also carry an XD 45 Tactical 5 inch at times. It is all relative. I will let you know when it comes in. Bud's was great to me.

KO41, thanks for the great photos. Looks like a decent pistol at a great price. If it shoots good who cares about a few marks. It's a service pistol after all.

I just mailed my money order Monday and they probably won't get it till Thursday. I won't see mine until next week. I may just have to take off work the day my dealer gets it. Been workin too much anyway and need a day to myself (and the new pistol of course).

Got mine last night, just a little pitting on the top of the slide.

I picked mine up at the dealer this morning. Its in good shape mechanically, doesn't appeard to have been shot a lot, though its clearly been fired. Outside, it has a couple of freckles and some holster wear. It has the Hogue grips (which means I will have to replace them with factory grips, I don't like the Hogues-but I think have a spare factory set hanging around somewhere). There appears to be a little rust under the grips, and the trigger has a bit of surface rust. I haven't had a chance to get it into the dark, but it appears that the night sights are mostly or all dead. Trijicon will relamp those if I decide to have it done, so that isn't an issue.

Mine is a Newport News PD gun for sure. The magazine in the pistol has "NNPD" etched on the bottom. It came in a 4586 box, but the box is marked with a different serial number. There was a fired case in the box dated 1-14-2004, long after production of the regular 3rd Generations ceased, and the box is marked "Special Order". I'm a little bummed that I didn't get the gun that the box is for, no doubt its a newer production gun than the one I got.

All in all I'm pleased for $259 shipped. I bought it as a shooter, not a collectors item, and I will be shooting it. Here are some pics:

Just wondering what would cause the pitting on some of the guns pictured. I know that stainless can rust but I wonder what kind of care they go through to get that bad.

I can tell you from experience that police guns get knocked around and abused regularly. Going in and out of the holster over and over again causes the shiny spots and wear marks, the grips get beat up knocking into things, but especially the door frames and driver's doors of cruisers. The big problem with rust and pitting is the guns getting wet and then being left in holsters, especially leather holsters. Its hard to go home and get movitated to clean a gun after spending hours in the rain directing traffic, working a wreck, etc., get off a 12 hour shift late, and then have to be back at work in less than 10 hours. Eat, sleep, get up, go back to work. No time or desire to clean the wet gun left in the duty rig. The cycle repeats and there you have it.

Police guns may or may not get shot a lot, but they all get a lot of abuse from being carried in the open in all kinds of weather and conditions.

Hmm....Newport News.....salt water/high humidity. Add the fact that most LEO's look at their gun as just a tool and rarely shoot it, let alone examine or clean it.

And it's stainless steel! SS is impervious to everything....right?

Those stainless steel 3rd generations can be brought back to like new by a trip back to Springfield for refinishing. IIRC they even restore the laser etched markings on those models so finished.

Nice 4586 Landric! I can't wait to see you shoot it in a match. Best regards 18DAI.

I got to see mine at the FFL a few minutes ago, but couldn't take it away as the Fed. site is down so we couldn't complete the transfer.

It looks to be in better external shape than the one Landric received, and a cursory inspection seems to show that it wasn't fired much. The night sights are probably pretty dead, the rear sight was so filthy you couldn't see the dots.
It has original S&W grips.

This is my first S&W .45, so I was quite interested in the feel of it. My hands (fingers?) are just a little short to be totally comfortable with a proper grip on a double-stack like my 5906. This 4586 allowed me to get more trigger finger than needed, well past the first knuckle.

One question though - the listing is gone from Bud's, but were these supposed to come with 2 magazines ? the invoice/order doesn't specify, and I didn't print the product page when I ordered it. This one only came with one.

New member here. I'll be picking up my 4586 tomorrow. I'm expecting some typical carry wear. I don't think it's worth it to have one refinished, and new grips installed. Before you know it, you spent more than what you could have on a nicer civilian owned one.

Years ago, I lucked out on a 4506 for 350.00, that was a police trade in. It was truly mint inside and out. Showed no signs of being fired, no wear at all. It was ignored by the shoppers since it appeared to have heavy corrosion on the slide. Turned out to be dirty gum residue from a long sticker that was on the slide. . A little alcohol, and it was gone. A cop working the gun show said it was probably a vault gun, a spare kept in the vault.

I can post pics tomorrow, if anyone wants them

KO: No eloquent way to put it, that sucks!

My 4586TSW and 4553TSW arrived at my dealer's yesterday and were both packaged, along with all the mags, in the 4586TSWs box, at least the box matches the 4586TSW. According to my dealer the Spec. Ord. # is 7207 so I'm hoping the night sights will be pretty fresh. No pics until at least Friday though.

It's nice to see so many people who've never owned a Smith and Wesson taking this opportunity to try one out, thanks for sharing everyone.

My spare mag was wrapped up in a bag and it looked like it was just some packing material, so it was a good thing that I checked it before throwing it away.

I got my 4586 today and was very suprised at the condition. No rust, pits, holster wear and was very clean. It came in correct box with warranty paper and vapor paper. The night sights are dim. I have a 4553 coming later but I think I used all my luck up on this one. The 4553 will probably look like it was used for a hockey puck.

Outstanding, new grips and from the looks of it no one would know it's a trade-in.

Mine finally made it home.

Serial number is BDJ16xx and it came in a box for BDJ22xx with the fired casing dated in Sept 2005.

Maybe we can start a program to get the boxes back to the correct owners
