Default 659 ambidexterous safety question

Why do 659's with the ambidexterous safety have a big phillips screw on the right side safety lever? Was this an early attempt at an ambi safety? It looks like a bubba job, but I've seen too many for sale that look the same (or don't have the ambi safety) but you can never tell with S&W. I've seen one with a allen screw, but it looked aftermarket, as it was blued.

The Phillips head screw was the original try at making an ambi safety for these guns, didn't work out too well as the right side lever would often fly off during recoil, even if the screw was staked or Locktighted.

The safety lever from a 5906 will fit that gun and be much more secure (should you end up needing to replace it).

My 659 has been totally reliable in terms of bullet feeding etc. However that screw on the right side looks like an after thought. I had the SS Phillips head screw and right safety lever fly off my 659 while shooting. I solved the problem with a drop of blue Loctite.

Thanks for the answers, I think I'll do the locktite procedure myself.
