Default 3913 mag saftey

So, All of my 3rd gen's have the mag saftey in tact. I recently got a 3913 without a mag saftey. It must have been removed since the pistol is not marked as such. At first I felt a little uncomfortable about this, but after a few range trips I am starting to wonder.

I know it may be a sore subject, but should I send it back to Smith and Wesson to get the mag saftey replaced or just leave it alone? what do you guys think?

And.................begin.

I like the mag safety on the 3rd gen guns. I probably would not buy one without the safety. However, if I happened to find that one of my guns didn't have a working mag safety I probably would not send it back just to have that problem fixed.

You should be able to get the magazine safety spring and plunger from Brownells. You'll have to sight the pistol in again afterward though-rear sight removal is necessary. Check the exploded parts diagram on their website for what's necessary.

is it really so easy a novice could do it? Or would it be best to get the parts and have a local gunsmith do it?

I will be honest, I am more comfortable with the mag saftey.

The factory part numbers are: ejector depressor plunger-101420000/ejector depressor spring-062300000. Figure about $15 retail for both.

Installation involves drifting the rear sight out of the dovetail (left to right when viewed from the rear) and removing the cover plate under the sight (which might also be missing). Watch out for the spring and plunger for the firing pin safety. The plungers and springs go under the cover plate and the rear sight is replaced, right to left. Don't forget to loosen the lock screw before trying to remove the sight or tighten it once the pistol is sighted in again.

Brownells didn't show a part number for the cover plate. If you're a novice/not mechanically handy, having a gunsmith who knows what they're doing with a S&W is worth the nominal charge for this type of work. Maryland Gun Works could probably assist you. It might be worth a call to S&W customer service. They should fall all overthemselves to restore a safety device.

It is my understanding that Smith and Wesson will replace any non-functioning saftey free of charge if sent to the factory. I am more trying to decide if it is worth it to send to them and how long it will take. Might wait till colder weather so I can carry something else while it is gone.
