Need advice about older semi autos
I'm a M1 guy (Carbine & Garand), so I need some advice on what to use for a home defense gun. My friend, who I shoot with on occasion, has offered to give me one of his older semi's. I will rarely carry it concealed (only camping or having to go into bad neighborhoods).
My friend said I can choose between a S&W 469 and a CZ-82, both from the '80s and both with 12 rd clips. I will only shoot it on the range now and then, so ammo costs are not important. There is no price difference (both are free to me), but he only wants to give me one.
Advice???

I've heard great things about CZ's, but I know Smith autos are great since I have several and have had no problems with them. You can also get mags for the S&W pretty easy since third gen mags should work with the gun (not sure which model, but someone will chime in). I guess I would take the one in nicer condition.

I would definitely go with the 469. I'm sure they are both good pistols but I love S&W autos.

I have a 469 referred to as a "Minnie" due to the shorter barrel. It is accurate and reliable. Has an alloy frame, and steel slide so it isn't too heavy for carry. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. The CZ's have a good reputation, but I'd go with the S&W 469.

I would take the one that it is easier to find mags for and since I believe the 6906 or 5906 mags will work in the 469 that would be my pick.

I have had a 469 since it was new (many years). It has never given me any problems, and I like the way it feels in my hand. I don't think that you would go wrong with it as your choice.

Take a folding stock M-1 carbine over any pistol for home defence - shoot, punch, jab, hit.

I recommend the 469 as well. I own several 69 series pistols. The 69 series 12 round 9mm magazines all interchange. A mag for a 6906/6904 works just fine in a 469, and should be readily available.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to go with the consensus of the experts and grab the 469. I appreciate your help.

samandglove1,
You have a true friend indeed, to offer a free pistol of your choice.
I own 2 469's. One that I bought when they were 1st introduced
in the early 80's.
I love mine so much that I bought a second one.
I would favor the 469.
But you need to decide on your own after handling and firing both
to determine which is more comfortable and accurate to shoot in
your hands, to determine which is best for you.

Here are a few pics of my 469's.

I would stick with the Garand. Just doesn't fit under the pillow like the 469 I guess. Maybe get a bigger pillow?

469, no doubt about it for me, from seeing both brands of guns shot quite a bit.

I shot about 50 rds from each gun over the weekend and ended up choosing the 469. After I got home I went online and am now planning on buying my own cz-82 (and 5-10 boxes of 9mm for my friend as a thank you gift). I can't believe I want them both, but the steel feels so great in your hands.....
Thanks for all your help/advice.
