Default Mag compatability

Looks like I am trading for a 4006 and 5903 and will be in need of mags for both. I am in Kalifornia so I need 10 rounders. Is there a chart that shows what mags fit what pistol? I know there is some interchangability within some lines and need to know what model/s to look for.

On another note, my S&W collection has unexpectedly taken off. I traded for a M&P on a whim, stumbled upon a 4506 and bought it, and am now trading a P220 for a 4006 and 5903. Strangely my first revo (686) and auto (39xx) were both Smiths many, many years ago. Its only by happenstance that 4 of my 6 handguns will now be S&W. And I am very pleased I have come full circle so to speak.

For the 4006-4003/4006/4043/4046/410. The 5906- 5903/5904/5943/5944/910, covers most of them. Stick with S&W mags, they can be found reasonable used, new run about $34 and new springs and followers would cost about $10-12 per mag so keep that in mind when pricing used ones.

Side question here:

How many magazines do you feel you need for each gun?

I know how many I want to acquire but wonder how many a shooter feels are needed. My collection has several brands of 1911 sidearms and I have at least two mags for each but I want 10 for each.

It is nice to go to a range with 10+ mags loaded and ready to fire. Yet that is for pleasure shooting.

I always have been comfortable with only the mag in the gun for self defense or work. It only takes one shot to stop a situation.

I like to have at least 4 per gun. After that, I will pick up more if I find a deal I cannot pass up. I am not a heavy volume shooter and do not seem to wear out mags/springs. But, I also buy quality mags even though it costs me more initially. What I am finding is the mags I am looking for now are a bit scare so I may pick up more than I usually do.

I like six mags for each auto and often end up with as many as 15 or 20 for each.

With six you can have one in the weapon and two spares. Rotate them out every six months to let the springs rest and they last for years.

I have been told by the maker of different magazines that the springs are made to withstand permanant compression. Maybe they are and maybe they are not. Which ever it is, I know that I have never had a magazine go bad for any reason and I have been shooting semi autos in some form or other since about 1966. I have a few Glock magazines in my gun room that have one round short of fully loaded for over five years and when I happen to get one to use off the shelf, they always work fine.

I am in the market for some S&W ACT mags for my S&W 1911 but cannot find any available. I have two of them, plus a box full of other brands, and I want to buy maybe six of the S&W mags. The two S&W mags I have now stay loaded all the time unless I am on the range using them.

You really can never have too many mags. Kind of like too much ammo. It just can't happen
