I have CS40 and M&P45C, thats as close a comparison I can give. My CS40 has what I consider to be very manageable recoil and my wife actually prefers shooting it (and shoots it more accurately) over M&P45 and CS45. I find the CS40 to be a little more compact for CC; don't really know how weights compare between the two, subjectively the CS feels "lighter". Main drawback IMO is much lower round count in CS. Find myself carrying the CS's more (have CS9 in addition to 40 and 45). I like both lines for quite different reasons. Hope this helps.

I currently have a M&P40c, I sold my CS40 to purchase the M&P. I can't say that the CS40 was a bad pistol, it just wasn't my cup of tea. It fit my hand OK, it shot well and recoil wasn't much different than any of my orther 3rd generation 40 pistols.

One of my favoirite pistols is the PC Shorty 40, I compared the CS40 to the Shorty 40 and what I found was that the Shorty 40 was smaller in every aspect except grip width being a double stack pistol. The slide on the CS40 was huge compared to the Shorty 40, which was the primary complaint I had with the CS. The bottom line was that the Shorty 40 is more concealable for me than the CS.

When I purchased the CS I was looking for a pistol that would be small/light enough to wear in an ankle holster. The M&PC I purchased earlier this year fits the bill nicely, it replaced a M60 that I was wearing daily in an Ankle Glove.

I prefer the M&P40C to the CS40 by a long shot, if I was looking for a concealable single stack 40 I would start looking for a 4040PD. The frame/slide made the CS40 a no go proposition for me. The 4040PD is the same size as the 3913, it's a very concealable package.

When Smith started building the 40 pistols on 45 series frames they lost appeal for me. The idea of the 40 to me always has been to have a small package, i.e. 9mm frame size such as the 3913 or 6906.

Cheers,
Sam

I have both the CS40 and the M&P40c.The CS40 with a set of "Big Dog's" grips makes a great carry piece.

The CS40 was the first to be discontinued by Smith and Wesson in the CS line of pistols. The people that have a Chiefs Special love them to death,I have a CS9,therefore it is unlikely that a person will own both to make the comparison.....God Bless.....Mike

I'd like to know about CS 45 holsters too. I may have a CS 45 by the end of the month.

I'll take a CS9, CS40, or CS45 over any M&P anyday. Regards 18DAI.

I just put a blued CS40 on layaway for $260 including box and one spare magazine at LGS. I was looking at a beat up old 469 for $299 when I spied the CS40 on the bottom shelf. Will post pics when I pick it up.

I just sold a 6906, which is roughly the same size as the M&P Compact, and bought a CS9. there is a HUGE difference in the comfortability between the 6906 and the CS9. The CS is a single stack, has a shorter grip, and carried WAY more comfortably for me. The 6906 was very nice, but I found I was never carrying it, and I have other full size guns. if you can get a nice CS series gun, I would go for it. S&W should never have stopped making these. I like a safety, amg disconnect, and hammer on a semi auto, and the 3rd gen guns are the only ones that fit the bill.
