Field stripped it and found the hammer full forward, no other obvious problem. Tried to move the hammer back to full cock so I could reassemble, but no joy. Hammer won't stay cocked, so can't even reassemble at this point. No loose or obviously broken parts in the thing and I'm stumped. Any good advice greatly appreciated.

Give it a good clean and lube.
If it sat a long time I am going to bet the sear is stuck with some old, sticky lube. I would use an aerosol cleaner of sorts, and spray down in the area of the hammer and below. Then spray thoroughly in the magwell area up towards the hammer.
After that it gets to the sear spring not pushing the sear to engage the hammer for some reason.
